Travelers visiting Mexico are allowed to take into the country only those items included in their personal luggage made up of new or used personal clothes, shoes, hygiene products, in reasonable quantities according to their planned length of stay in Mexico. If the personal effects and additional items exceed US$1,000.00 worth, import arrangements must be made at the port of entry, for the payment of foreign trade dues. Over the amount stated, it may be necessary to hire the services of a customs broker at the port of entry.
$1000? Are they serious? My sunglasses and watch cost more than $1000. Can anyone who has flown into Mexico with any amount of "stuff" tell me if this is for real or not, and how thoroughly they look through your stuff to find more than $1000 worth so they can fine you??

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Given that alone it wouldn't be worth it to me to fly to Mexico. Why not Brazil or something?
Cause I can get two tickets from Alaska to Mexico for $150 and 60,000 miles.

But there is no sense in going if I'm going to get hit up at the border for god only knows how much.

I have plenty of friends who have traveled back and forth recently and I know they had over $1k worth of clothes, cameras, etc. they weren't asked to pay anything or even deal with anyone other than the regular checks anyone went through. It sounds like one of those disclaimers that they only pull out when they actually want to hassel you for another reason-- like either it's obvious you're importing a lot of stuff for sale or whatever reason... or whatever they notice about you that isn't a justifiable reason to stop you. It reminds me of the 10k thing for flying internationally. Twice I have brought back antique abayas which are embroidered with gold wire. They weigh a ton and are worth about $5-8k each. That plus my other stuff probably set me over the limit, but since they were a gift I didn't declare them and no one cared.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Well, that's just it. I am ALWAYS trapped by such things. If anyone ever has any excuse to hassle me, they will. Coming in with a bunch of diving gear is basically saying, "yeah, I've got some cash, how much do you want?"

You know, the $10K limit only concerns cash and negotiable monetary instruments. It doesn't cover hard goods, like artwork.

I have been to Mexico twice. The amount is how much you claim on your customs form. They don't really search your bags unless you declare that you are bringing in that much stuff. You should be fine. Have a great trip!

ohh conquistador with a watch and glasses worth more than $1k.... I think you're too rich to go to Mexico.. maybe if they see your luggage (which probably is also more than $1k) will be enough to not let you through...
