Currently I live with my father and mother who are divorced but live in the same house, I am a student and I only make around 10,000 a year but my mother who is going to be a sponsor makes around 30,000 a year and my father has no income. My dad is 60 years old with a lot of medical problems and is trying to apply for disability, welfare, food stamps, etc. and the commonwealth needs my information. Will this affect me in any way since we live together? When my spouse arrives in the U.S. we plan on staying with my parents until she finds a job then move out. Also, since my spouse and I are still students our income is low at the moment. How much money will the whole process cost and when do you have to make the payments?

Not counting travel expenses the least expensive way is to skip the K3 and go the CR1 visa route.

You'll pay a filing fee of $355 right away, then in a few months, $80 and $355 fee for biometrics and the actual visa. If you've been married less than two years when she first uses the immigrant visa, 21 months after entry, she'll need to file to remove conditions with a fee total of $625.

Your mother's income will be sufficient to co-sponsor.

so my father's food stamps and welfare applications won't affect the process at all? even if we are still living together? I'm finishing school soon and and my spouse will finish school around march, we will have extra money and we want to be together as soon as possible. I've read on the forums that K3s are being processed just as fast as CR1s are, is that still true and are the payment times the same?

Actually K3's a bit faster but hundreds more costly. The initial filing fee is the same but you must adjust status at a cost of $1010 and cannot work for at least three or four months after entry. CR1 is work authorized upon entry and can take a job within a few weeks, as soon as the SS card arrives in the mail.
