I am an ex-serviceman, who served for 3 years in HKG in the early 90's, whilst it was a British Colony.

Do I have to get a police certificate from HKG, and if so, has anyone got any suggestions on how this can be obtained.

If you were in HK serving for the British Forces there is no need to get a police certificate from there because it will be listed in your Military Records (which you will need to provide at your interview). I was in the Army and served in Germany for 4 years but didn't need a certificate from there and got my K1 with no problems. :thumbs:

This is copied from the US Embassy website FAQ;

I'm in Her Majesty's Forces/ the Diplomatic Service; I am applying for an immigrant visa, do I require a police certificate?

The Embassy will accept a copy of your military record or discharge papers for any country were you might have served while in the HM Forces. The Embassy will accept a letter from the Foreign and Commonwealth office in lieu of police certificates for any country were you may have served for the British Government.

Agree with English Muffin on this one.... I needed on for time spent in Gibraltar as a dependant - was advised as a dependant I had to request one from Gib police but had I been a serving member of HM Forces I would simply supply letter as per EnglishMuffin.

I didn't actually need a letter, just my military record. A letter is only needed from people who served in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office - they obviously don't have the military record to show where they served. :thumbs:

WELL it seems no one has the answer for this, but thanks to my Sherlockian tenacity i have unearthed the mystery of exactly what is on the uk police certificate. if you have a category c caution, that did not result in a conviction and have a clear record the record is stepped down from your record after 5 years and is only available for the police to view.

if you have a category b or a, the time it takes to step down is dependent on the severity of the crime, and the time starts at 10 years to 30 years, or never. to get a more comprehensive list of the rules of whats on a police certificate please look here, its comprehensive and will put your mind at rest if like me you had a little blip many a eon ago.
