I'm all confused. What does the OP's long post have to do with insensitive posts in 'empathy' threads?

that was originally posted in the 911 thread....but Steven explained and apologized for posting it in that thread...

Order got screwed up on merge. The first post is the alleged insensitive post from the 911 Remembrance thread.

Sorry for causing confusion.

It was originally in the "remember 9/11" thread. It was moved here after Cleo started this new thread.

I think people are using her reactions as a means to score points themselves.

I know several people who lived through that day in lower manhattan, including a college boyfriend who escaped the south tower. Their feelings are pretty similar to hers. So I think it may be best to let it rest.

Well what would you say to it? I mean... why isn't she able to "let it rest" and take people at their word when they say they weren't trying to trivialise the event or politicise it?

There's no excuse to cherry pick people's posts about 9/11 and decide who is being genuine or not. That's outrageous, quite frankly.

Oh, I see.

Well, empathy threads are lame - but I do have to admit that I had to fight the urge to post an anti-government message in that 9/11 thread myself. Instead, I just didn't post anything. I decided to be a good VJ citizen (:

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

akdiver did you even read the 9/11 thread? Did you see why the person started it and read what she wrote? Like she even talked about her own political views(no, she didn't)...you don't even know if she likes our gov't or not, yet you were going to just go post an anti-govt post to her thread? I find this all interesting.

Hard to believe it was 7 years ago, though probably because the images are forever etched in the brain.

Difficult to make sense of even today - how something like this could have been plotted and carried out with such devastating success.

Asking the why's I think are important in getting down to the bottom of things.

Lots of decisions are being made locally due to the ideals regarding the latter part of your post. It's best for critical views of them to ensure they are the right decisions, not the most swift and reactionary, like the PATRIOT Act #######.

And Steven, I lived through it in NYC too as well as volunteered for the Red Cross but I don't expect you to apologize to me.

Dev, I posted what I thought was my way of remembering the morning of 911. Let's not turn that into an argument. Just leave it be. Thank you. (F)

Exactly as expected.

Disgusting.

Yawn.

Did you watch the buildings fall out your window? Did you smell smoke for months? Did you see emotionally battered firefighters & detectives? Did you live in a city of fear? Did you watch your neighborhood on lockdown?

I didn't think so.

You are not the only Member of VJ who had to deal with 9/11 up close and personal. The taste of the dust, the smell of the fire, the bodies that were tripped over live inside a persons head forever.

Your attitude here today does nothing to help those people who did get out or the debt owed to each and every rescue person who had the misfortune to be there in the weeks and months that followed.

Attacking people because they do not share your feelings does not make them understand you any better or uphold the sacrifice that so many made on that day.

Dev, I don't think anyone is attempting to trivialize the personal experience you lived.

Many of us were personally affected that day (Americans and non-Americans alike) by the loss of loved ones and friends. Not being in NYC or Pennsylvania or DC that day doesn't make someone callous.

I think the point is that you, Dev tend to be constantly on the defensive. You are rude to people many times and incredibly condescending. When someone doesn't agree with your POV you attack. You demand apologies from others but yet you have never, to my knowledge upon reading your posts (and of course I've only been here about 1 1/2 years) apologize to someone else. I've been the recipient of your condescension and even when it was misplaced and wrong and PROVEN, you still can't back down.

I'm not trying to attack you, but frankly I get incredibly tired of your act. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

That is completely separate from your experience during 9/11, and though my experience didn't involve being physically in NYC, I too suffered loss that day, and I would NEVER belittle your experience, nor do I pretend to understand it.

You don't hold a monopoly on the tragedy Dev...

some people live through trauma and feel they are the only ones who know and have ownership on a "feeling"

gee, thanks. Are you a doctor or do you just play one on VJ? You don't even know me. So save your armchair diagnosis.

Damn straight I believe those who weren't there will never 'get it'. My own family & friends agree with that. But I do not think I own that feeling.

there were allot of people effected..and i certainly did not mean to discount your pain and sadness over that horrendous day....peace to you...

Weren't you a therapist with actual credentials in discerning people as having psychological/emotional problems?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Not trying to be political (for once) but 9/11 didn't mean much to me over time because I was out of the country at the time so it may as well have an earthquake in China or the killings in Sudan. It bothered me at the time for about two weeks until I got home in Oct, 2002 and saw just a bunch of cheap plastic flags on cars and some stuff about United We Stand. I really didn't see or feel anything much different beyond more airport security.

I can relate to this. To me, the REAL tragedy of 9/11 is not the 5000 or so people who died or who were "directly affected" by the day's events. No, not at all. The REAL tragedy is the use of the event as an excuse to not merely infringe upon, but completely obliterate the rights of the people under the U.S. Constitution - supposedly the law of the land. Supposedly the only thing that protects us from tyrants and dictators and the whims of the rich and powerful. Supposedly the document that our highest leaders are supposed to support and defend. An even greater tragedy is the willingness of the people to simply accept this, under the notion of "we must give up our liberty to protect our freedom." People who are so willing to cast aside their hard won rights in a moment of foolishness and high emotion. People who accept the notion that if "you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear." People who willingly give government unlimited power to control every aspect of their lives. THAT, my friends, is the real tragedy.
