HEY VJ FAMILY! QUICK QUESTION...I AM STARTING TO RESEARCH INTO TICKET PRICES FOR MY FIANCE (INTERVIEW IS IN DECEMBER) AND I REALLY DO NOT KNOW IF YOU ARE FILLING FOR A K1 YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE A ROUND TRIP TICKET. I HAVE HEARD YOU HAVE TO BUY A ROUNDTRIP, BECAUSE THE PERSON IS NOT GUARANTEED A CITIZEN. IS THIS INCORRECT OR TRUE AND WHY?

ALSO, I WANTED TO GET TIPS FROM YOU GUYS ON WHAT SITE TO VISIT THAT WOULD BE BEST TO BUY THE TICKET.

Thanks Guys!!

First - round-trip tickets are NOT required. By contrast, if you do buy a round-trip ticket, you are not required to use the return portion - I say this because more often than not, a r/trip ticket is cheaper than a one-way.

Try any of the online travel sites:

Hi, based on my experience and read other suggestions, it is not advisable to get a ticket in advance. Some consulate offices takes time before the release of visa so to avoid the penalty or surcharge from airlines better to wait to get a ticket. I had a one way ticket only. I know its cheap to get a round trip but if you can't use on time the return one its more a waste of money. goodluck on your fiance's interview..

Hey Girl!

I read your time line and it looks like your hubby will be in your arms soon (yeah!!!). Now, getting to your question about airline tickets. I have also been searching for the best and cheapest way to both visit my love, and anticipating an approval, to get back to the U.S. The main airlines like Delta are very expensive. Approximately $3,500.00 for a one-way ticket from Lagos to U.S. I soon realized that most of the airlines make stops in either the U.K. or Frankfurt when flying from Lagos. So I tried breaking up the flight myself and it comes out so much cheaper. I looked at Virginnigeria.com and flights from Lagos to U.K. are $1,100 (including tax). Then I went to www.1800flyeurope.com and flights from U.K. to U.S are around $625.00 (you have to call the reservations number). Word of Caution. If you do this, make sure you apply for a transit visa to the U.K., which allows entrance into the U.K. for the purpose of transferring flights onward. It entails nothing more than paying a small fee (no more than $60.00 bucks), and showing evidence that you have an onward flight booked within 48 hours of arriving in U.K. Go to the U.K. website and download the visa application. It takes no longer than 3 days to be approved, so once you have your visa approval to U.S., your hubby will go to the U.K. embassy and submit Transit Visa application and fee, show flight itinerary. This seems like a lot of work but if it's a matter of saving $2000 it might be worth the fuss. I'm going to keep watching replies to your question to see if there is a cheaper or better option. If you come across one, please let me know.

Praying for you and your love,

Dionne

I think what Dionne says here is very useful--just as long as you don't get sacked with lots of fuel surcharges and taxes for EACH leg you have to book separately. And of course depending upon what time the traveling occurs I know you can get that UK-US leg cheaper. I bet some of the folks in the UK forum might even be able to offer up some tips for that part of the trip (if you book the legs separately)--that is, sites to check online for airfare sales or online booking.

And someone else said be careful about booking before getting the visa which is of course the safe way to go about it. I'm guessing though that right now you're trying to get an idea about things and how much it'll end up costing. Good luck!
