Hi guys.. we've just got married last month me and hubby are on process of getting SSN. He wanted to make sure that i can bring already his name on it. For now we are ordering our "proof of Marriage" since we were married in Vegas. Is it possible that i can bring his family name when we show them our marriage certificate when we apply or will they follow what i have in the passport? So when i get it we can proceed to AOS application. I hope we can hear from you soon.. Thanks and Godbless..

Yeah if you have been here 76 days or more, you are going to need to wait until you have an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned an SSN.

The name allowed to be used for the name change due to marriage is going to depend on state law where you apply for the SSN. Generally, you can use your maiden name and married name in some configuration as your last name or your maiden name as your middle name.

Ryan and I will go to SSA local office today to apply for SSN. It's been 11 days since I arrived here. We'll see then if my name is already in their system (I really hope). :)

Of course they accepted your application, but you are not getting an SSN and/or card until your status has been verified.

I'll post this again for others that might not have seen it.

SSA does not wait for your documents. They input your I-94 number into the DHS verification system. If that doesn't verify they send a secondary electronic verification request. The majority of the time that verifies and the application can be processed. If the response from the secondary request is to see copies of your documents, a copy of your I-94 is sent with Form G-845 to an immigration office to be verified. As a K-1 sending the G-845 can make your chances of getting an SSN based on the K-1 status and I-94 mighty slim, since it gets mailed to immigration and then mailed back and there is only a few offices doing the verifications for the whole United States.

What you need to do is find out why didn't your status didn't verify with the initial verification, since one letter can be incorrect in the spelling of your name and be acceptable. If it is any other reason, e.g., more than one letter misspelled, date of birth incorrect or no info in the system about you, you need to make sure the secondary verification request is done right away and then check back at least once a week to see if they received a response. If immigration requests to see a copy of your I-94, make sure that the G-845 is sent right away. Then give it two weeks at check back with the office at least once a week to see if they have received a response. If nothing is received after a month, have them send a second G-845 as a follow up.

Remember you can't be assigned an SSN or issued a card if your status is expired or within 14 days of expiring at the time your status has been verified and the are to clear the application This still counts no matter how many days before the 14 day period you applied. K-1 status is valid for 90 days, so you have 76 days to get your status verified and the application cleared. Otherwise, you will need an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned an SSN and issued a card.

Hello po. I would suggest too that once you applied for ssn make sure you make a follow up call or go in person asking the status of your application. When I applied for ssn before it took me almost 2 months before I got my card because I found out that social security personnel forgot to mail my request. What happened was I applied for my ssn then the lady told me it should take atleast 2-3 weeks for me to receive my card but then 1 month had passed I still didn't get my card . So we drove to the ssn office and asked the lady she then told us that she already submitted the papers to INS. We then drove all the way to Hardford and found out that they never received any request from ssn office in my area under my name. So we drove back to the ssn office and the lady checked her drawer and found out that my request for ssn was still there.

Ryan and I decided not to apply for my SSN today but instead do the process after we're married so that we no longer have to go back twice to the SSA local office to change my personal infos with my married name. A Pinay friend of mine who is here in AZ also suggested beforehand to get it after we're married. Any opinion is very much appreciated :D

Hi there congratulations!

Getting SSN here they require EAD before to get one. So better proceed with AOS application unless you have EAD already so you can get SSN other wise they will put a note on your SSN if they let you get one on the card saying that you can't apply for a job till you have EAD, some office they accept that but in here they are strict without EAD no SSn.

have a great time here!:-)

If it were me, I would bring that issue up for another vote. LOL If you wait too long you might wind up without a number. Price of gas has come down, make two trips.

Hmmm, I am wondering what could be the grounds not getting SSN when I apply after marriage. Number is infinite (just kidding) :D

Any idea?

Well if you want to be assigned one based on K-1 status, your status could expire before the application can be processed. SSA also will not assigned an SSN or issue a card if your status is within 14 days of expiring. K-1 status is valid for 90 days, so that gives you 76 days. Plus your immigration status must be verified before the application can be processed and that can take a while and the 14 day limit applies even if you applied before that time. So the longer you wait the closer you get to the 76th day.
