What are the more popular avenues for seeking employment?

In both Australia and the UK I have found Recruiters have a stranglehold on my part of the job market. Is this the same in the US? I will be living in MI with Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Benton Harbour/St Joseph within driving distance.

I'm have been trying to get a grip on employment expectations, so I can negotiate. ie re leave and what entitlements are available.

Does anyone have favourite sites for wage comparisons etc?

Or what have you done that has helped.

I have searched multiple websites in preparation but the help from those in the Finance Industry would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Northern Indiana - not too far from you. I work in finance - but for corporate. I went through the temp service & the company hired me permanently. The other job offers was from:

Cold application

Network (the CFO moved to other company so he offered me a position in his new company)

The salary is usually negotiable within certain range, personal leave - I am not so sure. Bigger company usually have their standard except for the 1st year you can negotiate unpaid leave.

The sites most used for most jobs in corporate America are Monster.com, Hotjobs.com & Careerbuilder.com. I've been able to find most jobs in those sites and they are published by either the employer itself or recruiting companies. You will also be able to find permanent positions, temporary, seasonal or tem to hire.

have you tried your local banks on the net..they post their positions under careers..

also some of the employment websites have a section for wages..eg what you should be getting with your experience...

Yes - it is the same in Canada. Definitely do a good search on the internet for staffing agencies that specialize in your field. The above sites can be useful as you can post your resume and see who finds you.

I just found myself taking a job offer today but the entire time I was searching I had many recruiters contact me. Sometimes they can work for you and other times they can't. It was a recruiter that found this job for me but I am finding the same thing as you. It is getting tougher and tougher to apply directly to a lot of companies. Good luck!

What about payscales. I know what I am worth in Australia and now the UK. How can I determine my worth and therefore negotiate salary?

I'm guessing location of employment can have significant impact on earning potential?

I think the best way would be to make an appointment or call a recruiting company that specializes in your line of work, they should be able to tell you what the average salary is for your position. You can also search the sites above to see if any of the listings has salaries posted, some of them do.
