Her original comment:

The South Carolina Democratic Chairwoman, Carol Fowler, offered the kind of shot at Sarah Palin that the Republicans have been complaining about, but which Democrats have largely avoided, in an interview with Politico today.

Fowler said McCain had chosen a running mate " whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham denounced Carol Fowler this afternoon and said Barack Obama ought to repudiate the South Carolina Democratic chair's comment that Sarah Palin's claim on the GOP ticket owed to her not having an abortion.

"I hope he will take this opportunity to step out and get this campaign back on track and reject this really outrageous, demeaning statement of someone who’s accomplished a lot in her life," Graham said on a conference call organized by John McCain's campaign to draw attention to the attack.

The South Carolina senator and close McCain friend also said Fowler's statement was reflective of what he termed Democrat's "meltdown mode."

He predicted that efforts "to demean her and wipe out all of her accomplishments because she disagrees with the NARAL crowd on one issue aer not going to work and the American people are going to reject it."

Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said: "Carol Fowler was speaking for herself. Her comments do not reflect our views in any way."

The back-and-forth over Fowler's comments is strikingly familiar. For months, it was McCain's campaign that was asked to respond to attacks launched by allies against Obama that touched on his race or identity. After initially denouncing such tactics, McCain took a hands-off posture earlier this spring, saying he would not "referee" every salvo launched by a third-party at Obama. Since then, he's declined to speak out against a number of attacks, including a number of attacks in Jerome Corsi's best-selling book.

Her very recent apology:

Fowler apologizes for abortion remark

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler, facing criticism for her remark to Politico's Alex Burns about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, issues an apology:

"I personally admire and respect the difficult choices that women make everyday, and I apologize to anyone who finds my comment offensive. I clumsily was making a point about people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue. Whether it’s the environment, the economy, the war or a woman’s right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue. That was the only point I was attempting to make."
