Hi Guys,

I'm a permanent resident still with the conditional status. Next year, I will be able to apply to "lift conditions" and then, the following year after for the citinzenship. The idea in the future is to bring my father here as a permanent resident too.

He likes to plan everything from advance so he is asking me about timelines. I have been trying to get that information from the "Immigration timelines" section but I'm not sure which type of visa will apply for him (IR5 ??).

I told him that he will need to wait at least 2 years from now to be able to apply, because my understanding is I need to have three years as a permanent resident to be able to apply for the citizenship. So I already have 1 year. But what I'm not sure is about the time will take for him to get the migration visa. And ... looking the timelines I found the citizenship takes about 3 to 4 months to be processed.

So what time frame is realistic ? ... maybe 3 years instead of 2 ?

Other question, I have been reading about the migration process for parents, and they talk about an agent ... what is that ? .. I haven't use one for my process ! ..

Thanks,

When you receive your conditional green card, you should be able to remove conditions 2 years later. If you are still married to your petitioner, you can file for citizenship a year later, total wait time 3 years. If you are not married to the petitioner, you will have to wait a total of 5 years to file for citizenship.

If you file for citizenship in 2 years when you are eligible if you are still married, it will take about 9-12 months for you to receive your US citizenship, maybe more depending on your local office. Then it will take about another year for the USCIS and the NVC to process your father's petition. So realistically, you're looking at an average of 4 years before he can come here with an immigrant visa.

The choice of agent you're talking about is when the NVC receives the approved I-130 you file for your father and they need to know who will be receiving all correspondence from them. You can find all this info in the NVC forum here on VJ.
