Really he is...

...when he is able to rip off the ideas, the almost identical words, of someone else and parade them as his own.

Those words seem familiar to anyone?

In case you didn't watch it, this is what Obama said:

"John McCain says he's about change too. Exce- and and so I guess his whole angle is - watch out, George Bush - except for economic policy, healthcare policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl-Rove-style politics, we're really gonna shake things up in Washington."

The cartoon came out on September 5th; Obama made this little proclamation last night. I guess plagiarism isn't above his pay grade.

That's not plagiarism.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means

1. to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own

2. to use (another's production) without crediting the source

3. to commit literary theft

4. to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

In what aspect is it not plagiarism?

Nothing in the cartoon caption is unique. This is just reaching for straws and nice links ...this was actually posted in Right Wing blogs such as Free Republic...not the WaPo. ;)

Secondly, you titled this thread to suggest that here is an example of Obama not being a good speaker after all. As if he's pulling his ideas from cartoonists because he can't really think for himself. It'd be one thing to suggest he was plagiarizing, but you're really stretching it if you would use such a coincidental example to conclude that Barack Obama is in fact, not a good speaker.

You're original statement was that this is not plagiarism. I'm still waiting for proof that this is not plagiarism. See that copyright sign at the bottom left side of the cartoon? That means that to use those words is to plagiarize if the source is not given.

Not unique? Again, I must draw your attention to the copyright sign.

I never "concluded" that Barack Obama is, in fact, not a good speaker. I never said that he is only a good speaker in situations where he is quoting uncited sources. If I limited my statement to singularly intimate that he his only a good speaker in these situations, you might have an argument. I, however, did not.

Who's stretching what now?

You said...

"Ok, I admit Obama is a great speaker...when he is able to rip off the ideas, the almost identical words, of someone else and parade them as his own."

That to me and probably most readers implies that Obama's oratory skills are only good when it's somebody else's. Do you want to clarify your statement as to what you are implying?

.....

Plagiarism is not copyright infringement. While both terms may apply to a particular act, they are different transgressions. Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of a copyright holder, when material protected by copyright is used without consent. On the other hand, plagiarism is concerned with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author's reputation that is achieved through false claims of authorship.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism

....

Again...you're reaching for straws.

Does anyone have the McCain transcript to show that they repeated the exact same thing? I don't exactly listen much to bumbling idiots who forget things all the time.

Not that two people TALKING has anything to do with plagiarism (this word was plagiarized from the Greeks, btw), unless McCain filed with the Copyright Office the rights to use those exact words like a slogan. And Some-Deity help us if they're going this far now.

I think the OP is saying that Obama copied what the cartoon said... I don't know if McCain actually said that..
