You can't dictate where threads will go, wild tangents or humorous anecdotes. If it really annoys you (as apposed to your just having a 'damnit' moment) I think I would suggest a new hobby. Sorry Stephen, but I can't support your appeal.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

 maybe if all the political threads were hijacked there would be less of them.

Or maybe a politics subforum, if people don't like politics that much. Or a few designated politics threads.

I do agree that sometimes it's nice to talk about something else, but I've also been on forums where people got way too ####### about politics, politics was banned/moved/clamped down on, then people just found new things to be sensitive and argue about. Never changed anything. People will be people.

Nah the politics subforum was suggested a number of times and dismissed.

That's where the "other place" came from...

Er, you realize I did also criticize this action in the 2nd paragraph, right? :P

...now that's taking liberties with what I said...good grief, PH.

I'd like to suggest that we all (including myself) refrain from bringing up other issues in a thread and just respond to the topic at hand....for our sanity while things get pretty heated as we approach the general election.

I don't agree, Steven.

There's no way to avoid talking about all of these different things when people are cheerleading from both sides and continuing the entertainment about Palin's pregnant daughter, Palin's Martian husband, Palin's daughter's boyfriend's cousin's grandfather's neice who has herpes, Barack Obama's pin lapel, Obama's wanting to teach sex to 5 year olds (that's one of the funniest yet, stupid asses), there's no way things will stay on topic.

So the best thing is, individually, just leave the topic whenever you like. The forum has rules, and if someone breaks the rules, they get punished.

I'd just say offset the political topics by creating a bunch more non-political ones.

Stephen, taking liberties? Come on, you would like people to post only the way you believe a thread should go staying "on topic" but threads, like conversations just don't work like that. They do go off on tangents, they do have humour and they go in unpredictable directions. You are at liberty at any point to do what you have been, ask people to stay on the topic you want the 'conversation' to go on and people might heed you, and they might not. They might not because they are being obtuse or they might not because the 'conversation' had taken a turn that they are interested in.

Now, if you want to take exception to the word 'dictate' that's up to you, again it seems to me to show that you are taking this maybe a tad too seriously? If you are not, then fair enough, but that's how it seems.

I guess it is not right when someone who is a true fan of a particular candidate makes a thread and then someone who is not a fan of that candidate comes along and disagrees.

That's not the issue. Here's an example of how some of these election threads have been going:

Original Post: John McCain voted against the GI Bill.

Poster Y: Well Obama attended a Muslim school in Indonesia.

OP: What the hell does that have anything to do with the original post?
