Postman hoards 20, 000 letters in Frankfurt

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - A Scottish postman working in Germany hoarded at least 20,000 letters at home because he felt his work was too taxing, police said on Tuesday.

The postman in Frankfurt was caught when a neighbor saw him tipping a mail delivery into a rubbish bin and alerted police.

"It's worth mentioning the 23-year-old didn't deliver mail addressed to himself either," local police said in a statement.

Investigating officers found rubbish bags and boxes full of letters and other post stashed around the man's flat and cellar. He told police he had got behind with deliveries because of his night school studies and felt too "overtaxed" to catch up.

Police said at a conservative estimate, the hoard, which the man had built up since August 2007, comprised at least 20,000 letters. Two vans were needed to remove it.

that and the Charlotte post office.. I forgot to write Germany in a letter.. even though I wrote Frankfurt am Main, and the zip code.. and got a letter sent back for 'insufficient address'.. they must have gotten confused with the other Frankfurt am Main, which is 5 miles south of Raleigh

I wrote "Deutschland" once and it was returned for the same reason. I feel your pain.

This type of crime seems to find no favour from any country. This happens all over the world everyday. I've seen numerous reports here in the USA and Canada where this happens. Sometimes they just dump it in their apartment or house, sometimes they open mail which appears to have been cards and take out gift cards and money. (Yes, people still send money through the mail!).

I've known a few of these people...actually one was a woman, and they were very very "different", were mentally ill and weren't taking any medication, had worked for the PO for many years. Very odd.

it happens everywhere, is correct..i had a postman, who was a client and he had allot ..thousands of letters in his attic...he had severala reas on his route that caused him to walk a long distance for a few houses..so he save the mail..as time went on..the letters were several weeks overdue..so he keep them and deliver the new mail/....this happen for 20 years...
