Many black writers of Davis's generation were CP-USA members. We all know about McCarthyism in this country. If you know anything at all about the Harlem Renaissance and the writers of the time period, as well as their histories and grievances, I think it makes the Communist affiliation more understandable. At least in Communism they had a voice and belonged. Clearly it didn't work out to be what many thought it would be and they eventually distanced themselves from it.
