Hi,

I don't know if anyone here has had similar issues with name on birth certificate. My husband has his name in his birth certificate without "kumar" at the end of the first name...i.e. if first name is Mahesh, usually the name may have "kumar" added to the first name. This is the case for my husband...his paspport and all the other school documents has "kumar" at the end of his first name, but the birth certificate doesn't. Although I can get a notarized letter stating it is the same person, will I have to write his name for "other names used or aliases" on ds-230 #2 and #27? I hadn't even though about this and didn't have copy of his birth certy with me when I filed I-130..and so in I-130 I haven't written his name w/o kumar in the part that asks "other names used"...so if I write it in ds-230 will it creat problem since it doesn't show that in I-130? I'm so confused on this. Thanks for any help in advance.

I'm sorry no one with experience answered yet, I hope someone will, soon!

My own opinion is that you should add that name to "other names used" on the DS-230. As for the I-130, you already filed that so nothing can be done about it. But I would fill out another one and give it to your husband for the interview, in case they ask about it, then he has another one ready to give. You can also get the notarized letter and submit that with the paperwork too.

I am the USC and while I was living in India people used to call me by an Indian name, it was just a nickname and not on any official document. Anyway when I filed the I-129F I wrote that name as "other name used". Then when I sent in the Affidavit of Support for the Consulate interview and while doing AOS here in USA, I decided since that name wasn't official in any way, I didn't list it as an alias. The point being, even if you have an alias on one form and not on another form, they don't seem to mind that or make an issue of it. So I hope in your case too it is not a big thing. B)

My name is spelled differently on my birth certificate vs the rest of my ID. In December 1999, at my Green Card interview in Montréal, I mentioned this fact to Consular staff there--to be told dismissively, "ya, we've seen that before--no issues".
