Hi Folks

Just a simple question ..After the CR-1 (Spouse Visa) Interview at Montreal , do you have to submit your current passport there? I always thought the green card was a seperate card and nothing has to be stamped on your current passport

Please do let me know

Thank you

YES, u have to give them ur cdn passport, and I believe it has to be valid for at least 6 months!

In ur passport they will put the TEMPORARY stamp in ur passport. Its glued in and acts as ur "grrencard" until the actual "greencard" arrives in the mail. Same size as ur drivers license. After u enter the USA and activate it, takes a bout a month to arrive!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

My Husband's passport was only valid until July - so 5 months - so they just gave him a 5 month validity on the temporary - not a big deal for us.

The visa in the passport is rather nice! Takes up a whole page and has your photo on it.

It looks kind of like this, but not exactly:

Thanks

rookie!! lol ur dealing with the govt, so u may never see it again, lol Where in Canada are u? The standard answer they give at the consulate is 2 weeks! Normally it is a lot quicker than that! Some get it back a few days later, some a week. Guess it al depends how motivated the consulate worker is. At 1 time in Montreal, u got the the very same day! Those good days are gone! A few have managed to cry or stomp their feet and got them that day, not sure what thier secret was,lol But their is no hard concrete answer, and yes that does suck for planning ur move!!

Oh ..I am in Toronto...So my interview will be at Montreal..You r right about "not seeing it again part" I think that way everytime I had over my passport to any agency!

My hopes just got crashed, as i am going on a 6 weeks vacation starting mid nov ...so no scope of attending interview in nov (beginning) before I leave :(

Still hoping for an October date ..

Thanks Flames9!

So do you have to stick around Montreal and pick your passport up when they are done with it or will they mail it to you? I am in Calgary and when my interview comes up I'll have to travel to Montreal. Seeing as most airlines now require passports for even local travel I'm either going to be stuck in Montreal. Any insights on this?

YOU provide them with an express post envelope, they mail it back to you.

Just got back from Montreal (from Edmonton) - and you leave your passport with them - so they can put in your visa. You have to make sure you have other ID to get on the plane. I just used my drivers license. You don't need a passport to travel within Canada (yet).

While I was there - Abby (of theWhites) had an expedited K-1 visa, and they weren't sure if they would make the passport available that day for her. Sounds like the person interviewing her was very nice and made sure that it was done by 3pm. Unless you have a very good reason for needing it that day, I think their general policy is that it will be mailed out in the xpressport mailer.
