Asked to compare Michelle Obama to Sarah Palin, Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) stated:

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

I can't believe that our "leaders" are still using words like uppity. That's so grotesquely offensive I don't even know where to start. Sadly, it's not surprising, though.

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., was chewing the fat with reporters in the U.S. Capitol and was asked to compare Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama.

"Just from what little I've seen of her and Mr. Obama, Senator Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks they're uppity."

"Asked to clarify that he used the word 'uppity,' Westmoreland said, 'Uppity, yeah,' " the newspaper The Hill reported.

OK. Who wants to start the countdown for when folks start dropping "darkie," "buck" and "#######" in casual conversations and interviews? They have to start off low on the offensive scale. They're going to save "n!gger" for late October.

Places please, Negras! We can't have you all running around thinking you're free and sh!t. Someone needs to bring the cotton harvest in!

This latest incident should dovetail nicely with the overt, not covet, in-your-face, sit-down-and-shut-up bigotry Michelle is dealing with. How dare she be black AND have a #######? Obviously she deserves our scorn.

I can now see why sister hits the gym so hard. She's prepared to take a mutha down if her Secret Service detail falls short.

Some alleged "PUMAs," those faux Hillary Clinton-loving dead-enders, put out a few, ahem, racist videos depicting Michelle Obama with a man both in drag and blackface. (Via of Michelle Obama Watch, by Rumproast)

“Michelle” is referred to as a “goddamn ######” by one of her two white slaves and the “grand dragon” of the NAACP ("National Association for the Annihilation of Caucasian People") is introduced, replete with a black hood and robe. And the dreck doesn’t end there.

If this were a simple parodist jaunt it would still miss the mark by a thousand feet. See? When something is racist there is very little room for debate. Racism can be covert, but this is "knock you over with a two-by-four" obvious. If you don't think this is racist I got a DW Griffith film to show you.

Some of the black characters are played by white actors with make-up, particularly those characters who were required to come in contact with a white actress. The person playing the Cameron's maid is not only clearly white, but is also obviously male. ("The Birth of a Nation,"
trivia)

Some sh!t never changes. This is what happens when black folks forget their place!

just curious, I've never thought of the term uppity as particularly offensive, apparently that isn't so?

When applied to a black person by a southern white, historical context kicks in. Otherwise, it's really just a word.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

It was an old derogatory term to describe 'negros' who didn't fit the stereotype of ignorant and poor. It was a way of saying, "No matter what you wear, or how well you speak, you're still just a n!gger."

What's wrong with uppity? At least he didn't call her " an ugly ######" (replace censored # with female dog). Edited by akdiver

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Uppity is very much offensive when used by a white person in regard to a successful black person. The Congressman would know that.

Are your innocent interviewees under the age of 30? Perhaps the term has lost its sting among the young, but anyone of a certain age will immediately know "uppity" as a racist term with a very sharp edge, almost always combined with the N-word lest anyone miss the point.

Westmoreland is 58 years old and from rural Georgia. He claims never to have heard the derogatory term in the little mill town where he grew up. Baldly put, he's a liar--or, as the Los Angeles Times political blog puts it, "The Ticket finds it amazing that someone with such a sheltered upbringing could achieve such success in life."

.....

McNamee also provided a 1952 citation from F. L. Allen, Big Change II. viii. 130: "The effect of the automobile revolution was especially noticeable in the South, where one began to hear whites complaining about ‘uppity niggers’ on the highways, where there was no Jim Crow."

OK...so person A offends person B. This is something to be shocked and outraged about?

FWIW, I think she would be offended if he called her an ugly ###### too.

up·pi·ty (p-t) - adj. Informal. Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's station; presumptuous
There are a LOT of uppity people - of all colours. High schools are FULL of such people. Hell, Sarah Palin is about as uppity as it gets. Edited by akdiver
