Don't you know? America is, like, sooooooooooo important, like, ya know?

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

It's more important than Alaska ;)

But seriously, this conversation is in context of American politics.

It's not like we're trying to apply American context to something that took place in rural China.

I dunno man - I've heard the term "uppity n*gger" before, and I'm not from this country. You may not have heard of it - but clearly the choice of words made the news for a reason.

Yes, I've certainly heard that term. One definition is akin to "snooty," but another certainly has racist/classist significance, which is hard to ignore given the situation. Er, maybe he just meant to say she was snooty...

Why not? America tries to apply its context to goverments, peoples, values and belief systems all across the planet.....with varying degrees of success and failure.

This conversation is about applying American context to American politics.

Your attempts to hijack the thread with your own anti-American secessionist agenda will not work.

Asked to compare Michelle Obama to Sarah Palin, Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) stated:

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

Why is it that in this country,an African-American cannot be educated without being called uppity or a sell-out ?

Yes, I've certainly heard that term. One definition is akin to "snooty," but another certainly has racist/classist significance, which is hard to ignore given the situation. Er, maybe he just meant to say she was snooty...
EVEN IF he had come right out and said what he may have been thinking, such as, "Mrs. Obama is an uppity *** that should never have been permitted to leave her master's plantation" - so what? Does this this have to do with the price of tomatoes in Alaska?

Some people are racist. That some politicians are racist should come as no big shock or surprise to people.

If the shock and surprise is that he would actually say what is on his mind, then that says more about the shocked person's belief in the first amendment more than anything else.

If the shock and surprise is that, as a politician, he should be above expressing opinions such as this, which people will be offended by, I say why? Why should politicians be better than anyone else? Isn't this government supposed to be of the people by the people? Politicians are just people. This tendency to put them on a pedestal and hold them to a high standard and attack them for anything they say or do that might even be the slightest bit negative is why a lot of very good, very qualified, very smart people will have nothing to do with elected office - which is a shame.

Why is it that in this country,an African-American cannot be educated without being called uppity or a sell-out ?
As I am sure you know, there is a large portion of the "black community" that views the pursuit of education and increasing one's "status" and self-reliance as a white activity to be shunned by blacks. Those that persist risk being called race traitors, sellouts, oreos, and whatever else. So, if you're looking to place some blame, be sure to spread it around where it needs to go. Edited by akdiver

Any man can have an agenda. It takes resources to have a plan :)

By the way, for thread readers who don't know what I'm referring to, it's this:

Not only Alaska First - but I'll come right out and say it - screw the United States! It wouldn't upset me very much if Russia or China dropped a big ole nuke right in downtown L.A. or NYC. I'd love to see THAT on CNN.

An agenda without a plan is like a ####### without a #######. Lonely and ineffective.

It's true - all true. I said that. But I didn't have it in mind when participating in this thread (:

I know that's why I said "sell-out" because that is what some African-Americans call other African-Americans who are educated.

All I said was that his word choice was poor. It's true that people say stupid sh!it all the time, but politicians more so than just about anyone else need to watch what they say. No one is questioning his right to say what's on his mind; he's not going to get thrown in jail for making a careless remark. But politicians should, ideally, be held to a high standard.
