Unless a candidate did something grossly abnormal or criminal (i.e. child prostitution, murder, dresses up as a clown, etc), I fail to see how their past is relevant to their ability to be a leader. This is especially true with the position of VP, since that title is practically worthless. The only real benefit to it is being the tie-breaker in the Senate and becoming the President if the active President dies while in office.

What does the VP do on a more day-to-day basis, anyway? Meet with lower-level diplomats and visit some delegates? Make a speech here and there? Visit the opening of a hospital? Christen a new ship? The VP takes on duties that could be considered "public relations field work." With rare exception, the VP will not be making any truly important decisions regarding the country.

Going back to Palin's past for a moment... she's currently 44 years-old. While I'm younger, I know I'm not the same person I was ten years ago. Someone on here mentioned that Palin got married in 1988. That's 20 years ago, so she'd be 24. How many people are exactly the same -- psychologically, politically and perhaps even spiritually -- two decades apart? I'm sure some of us are, but depending on the age range, I'll bet quite a few have changed their outlook in life.

As long as you realize that Palin is a FAR right hardliner--that means NO abortions for ANY reasons, Anti-birth control--then okay, support her. Also keep in mind that she has already abused her office by using her position to run off state employees who "are not loyal to her". That is really funny, because I thought state employees should be loyal to their STATE! She has also enacted legislation to force her ideas on others--cutting substantial funding for programs not aligned with her "worldview". See above.

Palin scares me.

She came out of left field which has generated a lot of media attention but because NO ONE had even considered her, yes, the media brought up the negatives. It was pretty evident that the RNC hadn't brought anything up.

So far, she is a cheerleader. She is doing what a Veep nominee should do--attack the prez nominee for the other side.

She is a bulldog--she attacks anything and anyone who doesn't see the world through her eyes.

I think that is a definition of a non-thinker.

HooBoy....Palin as prez?? no way

who the heck cares if she had sex before marriage...

I care. I think that any woman that has sex before her wedding is gross and abnormal. And everybody knows that women like that are not able to perform a good job ever in their life just because of the fact they had sex when they were single.

Shame on her.

 I love you, Nessa (in a totally non-Lesbian way)

Problem. It is most certainly a neo-conservative modus operandi now to ensure they have the support of "life-long" hard-lined conservatives, mostly thanks to the moderate, Rockefeller Republicans bargaining with the evil liberals, and, of course, the attack on judges, especially "traitors" John Paul Stevens and David Souter, who were appointed by Republicans and non-partisan, opposed to the extremely partisan ideologues Scalia, Thomas, and now Roberts. These new Republicans weren't the moderate Republicans of yore that even I could admire. They're definitely of a new brand.

As for what the VP does that's important, that's a pretty ugly question you asked. The VP is the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. Besides that and being the Presidential successor, I see no more important roles than that.

Palin has made it glaringly obvious she's very much an extremist and an ideologue. People just jump onto the she-a-woman bandwagon, as if that's supposed to impress people who want diversity. Yes, diversity, no, not stupidity. Republicans have been trying to play the race and sex card to their advantage with extremists like Clarence Thomas, Alberto Gonzales, Sarah Palin, etc. to make people think diversity = non-extremism. Not the case.
