I suspect Palin's stance on abstinence has more to do with playing to her base of support, in much the same way that McCain is courting conservatives by softening and reversing his stances elsewhere.

They can do it - but I suspect it's because they have to, rather than that they themselves necessarily believe it.

The most ridiculous was Bill Clinton's "I smoked but didn't inhale". How refreshing it would be to hear them say "you know - I tried it, liked it and don't see what the fuss is about", or even "I tried it but didn't care for it".

They've always got to cowtow to the moral majority who say that drugs are irresponsible and evil. You see the same thing in the various moral panics about video nasties (sp. Hillary Clinton's brief crusade against Grand Theft Auto) I'm often left wondering how many of the people who complained actually watched/experienced the object of their complaint.

It seems a few letters from constituents are sufficient to go off on a big diatribe.

If it is true that this is proof that Ms Palin had sex before marriage,, this would be a good thing because it would mean that even these highly morally upright citizens who would like everyone to behave in a certain way, support those who make mistakes and fail to do what they preach they ought to. It's a human face on right wing religious zeal. I approve of it because it's a lot better than casting out the afflicted.

Aye. One can form opinions based on past experiences, hindsight being 20-20 and all that. Maybe she was pregnant when she got married. Who cares. She now believes that abstinence is a better option.

I think this is a politically correct approach.

If someone wants to force children that aren't theirs into the abstinence-works #######, they should probably be able to follow their own rules. Herself and her own children, well, that's actually a perfectly legitimate hit, because she wants to make morals the issue, and here are the morals, backfiring in her face.

My twins were born at 8 months ... preemie ....

Maybe you should get a 1st hand education and spend time in NICU and witness how preemie some children really can be and still survive.

Hint:

babies born 32 weeks onwards (most babies are able to survive with the help of medical technology)

babies born at 25 weeks have a 50% chance of survival with the help of medical technology

Well, duh! I suppose Barack Obama chose Biden on personal/policy reasons and not because his standing beside him lends an air of gravitas that he was previously lacking?

They both want to win, they will both choose a VP that they believe gives them the best chance of doing that.
