It could fit in with the Mayan end of the world scenario... 2012. Remember our Gregorian calendar is off by anywhere between 4-6 years so... 2012-4 = 2008... OH MY!!

There is much fear that the project WILL GENERATE a black-hole--unfortunately, the tense is wrong. One has already been generated, and will continue growing--the one in which the tax € went to fund it.

That is whay I'd say- as long as there is no matter around this purported black hole... then we'd hypothetically be safe. Black holes have a tendency to grow directly proportional to the mass they swallow.

Death by black hole would be swift and presumably if painful, only for a nano second. I actually hope they do manage to create a black hole, that would be incredibly cool. Is it remotely possible that they might?

I really doubt it. If they do... and its inside a vaccum... then I wouldn't be too concerned. The absence of some matter in the singularity's location would, however... indicate that it indeed happened.

Well, the theory goes that the closer you get to the event horizon the slower time goes. So in effect when you reach the horizon time would stop. It might not be very nice.

I wasn't hoping they create an earth swallowing black hole.

I heard that if the earth ever did brush up against one of the big black holes roaming the universe, the incoming effects of being in the vicinity would do the population in, not the actual 'eye of the hole' as it were, so I very much doubt there would be some living people around to observe the oddities of time surrounding it.
