Great! We won't have to witness Matthews slobering over his man-crush idol, Barack, any longer...........

MSNBC shake-up: Olbermann and Matthews no longer anchoring Michael Calderone

Sun Sep 7, 11:31 PM ET

Less than two weeks ago, MSNBC president Phil Griffin was still defending the network's anchor team to Politico, despite reports of turmoil behind-the-scenes and on-air squabbles. At the time, a high-ranking MSNBC journalist told me the network was "about to blow up."

Well, here's the blow up! The NY Times reports tonight that Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann will no longer anchor during upcoming political news events, as network insiders reveal more about what's been happening.

After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.

The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.

And there's more.

In interviews, 10 current and former staff members said that long-simmering tensions between MSNBC and NBC reached a boiling point during the conventions. “MSNBC is behaving like a heroin addict,” one senior staff member observed. “They’re living from fix to fix and swearing they’ll go into rehab the next week.”

The Times also reports that "Jeff Zucker, chief executive of NBC Universal, and Steve Capus, president of NBC News, considered flying to the Republican convention in Minnesota last week to address the lingering tensions."

I don't watch MSNBC - but the issue here sounds less about bias and more about the original anchor team not working together very well.

Olbermann is of course very biased - but its the corporate management (i.e. the producer) that sets the tone for these shows, not so much the anchor team itself.

I don't watch major networks (and their subsidiaries) anymore, but in what I have seen Olbermann and Matthews were both willing to criticize both their party and the other, vehemently at that, which earns them my respect. However, not watching their shows all of the time, and just seeing tidbits here and there (almost entirely on Youtube, as I haven't bothered to turn my TV on since the first week of June), I haven't been able to tell if they're like the rest of the sensationalist media who want to talk about moronic issues like Obama's pastor or lapel pin.

Well now that you mention it - isn't Sean Hannity doing the election coverage for Fox? He was during the conventions I think...

Alan Colmes is usually with him. Geraldine Ferraro, Democrat nominee for VP in 1984, shows up fairly regularly on Fox. There are others. Oh yeah, even Obama will finally go on O'Reilly's show. Obama is a traitor!

The point is is fairly easy to have right and left on Fox but I've never seen Olbermann interview anyone who disagrees with him. When the RNC showed some 9/11 footage he looked like he had just been shaking with rage and had to compose himself when the camera came on. If the guy can't handle some 7 year-old news footage, he has no business in front of camera pretending to be to be neutral source for the news.

Wait, people go to major networks for "neutral" sources? :o

But yeah, the RNC making a play on 9/11 was pretty ###### up, and typical scare-mongering politics, acting like Republicans are going to protect them. Much like I'm sure Mark Foley protected the children.

As I said - I don't watch Olbermann so I don't see any need to defend him. But the gloating over reassignment at MSNBC when he is not untypical of the sort of star player journalists that frequent corporate network news is more than a little baffling. Fox has problems of its own - and its idea of fair and balanced is simplistic at best.

I've always said that most of the corporate news networks are over-sensational and light-weight when it comes to coverage.

I watched Olbermann during both conventions. He had the highest praise for democrats yet was trying to refute any statements republicans made.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
