So she's a Unitarian, but the newspaper reports state she is Lutheran.

From NPR:

Examining Palin's Pentecostal Background

On June 8, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin dropped in on the Wasilla Assembly of God, the church she and her family attended until 2002. During the service, she addressed a group of young missionaries and said she had a "word" from the Lord for them. She prayed that Jesus would give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation.

"That spirit of revelation also including the spirit of prophecy that God's going to tell you what is going on, and what is going to go on, and you guys are going to have that within you, and it's just going to bubble up and bubble over and it's going to pour out throughout the state of Alaska," Palin said at the time.

Margaret Poloma, at the University of Akron, has written several books on Pentecostalism and is herself a Pentacostal Christian.

Poloma has listened to the tape of the governor's Assembly of God address and says of Palin's faith: "It seems to me that she's the real McCoy."

Poloma says faith in divine revelation, prophecy and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit are hallmarks of the Pentecostal faith.

Palin now goes to a nondenominational Bible church when she's in Wasilla, but her years attending Pentecostal churches, including the one she currently attends in Juneau, have no doubt shaped her faith and, possibly, her view of world events.

For example, at the same service, Palin talks about the war in Iraq.

"Pray our military men and women who are striving to do what is right also for this country — that our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," Palin said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

Poloma says some people might hear that and say Palin believes this is a holy war, or that Pentecostals think this is a holy war.

"I would think it's fair to say. Yes," Poloma says.

One reason, Poloma says, is that most Pentecostals believe Islam is a false religion.

"Many times you hear it referred to as a kind of diabolical religion, and that comes from the idea of Christianity being the true religion, but also their support for Israel, because they contend that Israel [represents] God's chosen people and you dare not touch them."

She says this points to a central belief that there is a cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil. It was language Palin used when accepting the nomination on Wednesday night when she spoke of the war on terrorism and it was language used by Palin's current pastor, Mike Rose, at Juneau Christian Center.

"Have you ever felt that way about devil, the ultimate terrorist?" he asked.

Pentecostals believe God routinely intervenes in human affairs and Palin sounded like a Pentecostal when she asked people at Wasilla Assembly of God to pray about building a gas pipeline through Alaska.

"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

Darrell Bock, a New Testament scholar at Dallas Theological Seminary, says some Pentecostals hold to their convictions in the face of opposition because they believe they are in tune with the will of God.

"What faith does in this case is fuel a sense of mission and direction," Bock says. "It can also produce a little bit of element of certainty about that direction."

Bock, however, warns against drawing conclusions about anyone's policies from his or her faith.

"Trying to figure out what the link is between a person's faith and their politics is very, very difficult business because there is so much pragmatically and ideologically that's also driving what's going on," he says. "There's not just the faith element."

Bock says President Bush and Democratic nominee Barack Obama have already been through this sort of spiritual vetting. Now it's Palin's turn.

Oh man so she's really Pentecostal which is like the "Born Again", "Jesus Saves" type that talks to the Holy Spirit directly in front of the congregation and passes on the message.

God has a plan for Norway. One of my Norwegian college buddies became born again pentecostal in the last few years and I cut off almost all communication with her because she sounded nuts to me every time we'd talk on the phone, or in emails, or chats.

She'd always mention God one way or another and she changed her story three different time on how she found Jesus and told me each version as if she believed it were true although I'd heard three different versions from her mouth. That is speaking in tongues if you know what I mean. When I heard she was Pentecostal and she spoke directly with the Holy Ghost and anyone can go up in front of the congregation and do that and pass on messages to the masses I knew she'd has a complete psychotic break because that did not sound like the college friend I knew at all.

I dated a girl in college who joined ISKCON (Hare Krishna) while we were together. HK's are similarly psychotic.

You know, I'm getting really really tired of the religious beliefs of candidates being front and center in this election.

Show me a candidate THEMSELVES at a pulpit preaching an assault against the American constitution, and then it might matter.

Otherwise, it's all smoke and mirrors.

That's still not definitive, Olivia. It's a report in Time Magazine, based upon allegations that are yet unproven.

We cannot 'tar and feather' anybody without the proof. ANY candidate.

Is it fair to expect people to give Obama a pass on Reverand Wright but criticize Palin about her Pentecostal leanings?

Did Sarah Palin do something wrong in expressing that God has a plan for Alaska (in her political ads)? Doesn't she have freedom of speech?

I don't support Palin either, but I didn't come to that conclusion based upon yet-unproven allegations or religious opinions. I just think she's a dippy smart-a$$ who believes the GOP sees greatness in her. I don't think it would hurt her one bit to compare her resume to that of Olympia Snowe, whose nomination would have made a whole lot more sense if real issues were the game the GOP is playing.

Looks like the writer is fresh out of perspective. Does anyone have any spare perspective they can loan olivia & rebeccajo?

Rebeccajo,

A new thread was started by another poster on VJ just after the last post in this thread, on the same topic, naming the books that Palin requested be banned. The list of the books were in the other threads post. To which you wrote in agreement, essentially, to the same topic that this thread was written about in regards to the constitution. Olivia and A.J. were discussing what affects Palin's religion would also have on her politics and if McCain's party was aware of it.

I wrote in agreement to that thread that yes - if there is proof - it would be unconstitutional.

I'm aware of what I've written and I think I've been quite clear with my perspective.

Unitarian is a more blase christian which can get away with pretty much anything as they are border line agnostics, and they also accept all religions into their churches. Lutheran is also good based off of Martin Luther and the 95 articles he posted to do something about the "buy your way into heaven" coupons that the Catholics were selling called, "indulgences", which the Church used the funds from the spruce up the churches. Martin Luther sent his 95 complaints to his friends who used mass printing as a form of publication and it spread like wildfire leading him into a head on collision with the Pope. The first printers were the real capitalists being able to reproduce "faster and cheaper" then penmanship.

Words became definitive and with that you could not plead ignorance anymore. Society became the "Never mind the fancy chat, show me," attitude.

I'm not sure what being Lutheran has to do with this?

I do see knocks against Catholicism :) (17th century Catholicism anyway)

:P Aubrey!

I'm a old Democrate having a Republican Girl dream! I snapped out of it.

You know this whole sustainability push at the University of Idaho this semester has me thinking about the Kyoto Treaty our Nation hasn't signed into effect like Australia. What are we waiting for? One of my PSA's this semester has to be a collaboration with a company that is green/sustainable. I had to watch an, "Inconvenient Truth". After watching that I changed my mind and thought about the whole energy issue and the oil issue and the alternatives.

I know why McCain picked Palin; to continue the party politics and to drill oil in Alaska. Seeking old polluting technology. The Democrats, like Al Gore, don't want that and the Republicans do. The more I dig for information on the candidates though the more I realize there are bigger issues than terrorism. I'm also learning Palin maybe graduated from our University last from the school of Journalism but she went to 6 other Universities and that just kinds of ruins it. Her party politics doesn't represent U of I's message and push for sustainability either. Also because of this note I read on a journalist resource website calling Palin and McCain out for the 1st Amendment thing got a bee in my bonette with me being a gradute from the U of I journalism and mass media department.

Did you see the article in the Argonaut for Palin?

BTW I ran into someone who is doing an article on non-traditional students for the blot and they may interview me for the piece. I told them I knew the Art Director.

Yeah, seems the photographer at one of the meeting knows you, too (Jake Barber). You really get around. :P They didn't seem to care that I'm a non-traditional student, though. :crying:

I'm taking the week off from watching political stuff after 2 weeks of conventions, and I haven't bothered to seek out an Argonaut paper just yet. But maybe I will to read their piece about the student health pharmacy nonsense. Now THAT is worth reading!

As for Palin.... BOOOOOOOO. She poorly represents UIdaho, imo. And McCain isn't acting like the candidate I voted for in 2000. Shame on him for doing politics as usual.
