People For Response to Revelations of Palin’s Attempted Book Banning

For Immediate Release:

9/02/2008

Time Magazine today reports that Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to ban books from her local library as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and then threatened to fire the librarian who stood up to her for not giving “full support” to the mayor. People For the American Way president Kathryn Kolbert issued the following statement: “People can disagree about a lot of things, but censorship is completely beyond the pale. Our democracy was founded on the belief that government shouldn’t tell people what kinds of books to read or what kind of beliefs to hold. No one with that kind of history should be anywhere near the White House. Sarah Palin needs to clarify her stance on freedom of speech immediately, and John McCain needs to explain why he chose a running mate with so little regard for the Constitution.”

You would think that People For the American Way would know that the form of government we have is a republic, not a democracy.

The article is also incorrect - she asked the librarian if she would pull books if asked, librarian said no, librarian got fired. Palin didn't actually TELL the library to censor anything. Not that I think it matters in terms of Palin being a worthless dirtbag, but the article should at least get the facts right.

:P Aubrey!

I'm a old Democrate having a Republican Girl dream! I snapped out of it.

You know this whole sustainability push at the University of Idaho this semester has me thinking about the Kyoto Treaty our Nation hasn't signed into effect like Australia. What are we waiting for? One of my PSA's this semester has to be a collaboration with a company that is green/sustainable. I had to watch an, "Inconvenient Truth". After watching that I changed my mind and thought about the whole energy issue and the oil issue and the alternatives.

I know why McCain picked Palin; to continue the party politics and to drill oil in Alaska. Seeking old polluting technology. The Democrats, like Al Gore, don't want that and the Republicans do. The more I dig for information on the candidates though the more I realize there are bigger issues than terrorism. I'm also learning Palin maybe graduated from our University last from the school of Journalism but she went to 6 other Universities and that just kinds of ruins it. Her party politics doesn't represent U of I's message and push for sustainability either. Also because of this note I read on a journalist resource website calling Palin and McCain out for the 1st Amendment thing got a bee in my bonette with me being a gradute from the U of I journalism and mass media department.

Did you see the article in the Argonaut for Palin?

BTW I ran into someone who is doing an article on non-traditional students for the blot and they may interview me for the piece. I told them I knew the Art Director.

BusinessWeek:

Imagine how the leaders of the rest of the world would deal with her as president. The United States would be a laughingstock among nations.

And this differs from the current situation - how?

What actually happened? Ms Palin asked the librarian if she would pull some books off the shelves if she was asked to? The librarian said "no" the presumabely 'library board' (as apposed to the librarian her/himself) decide what books to have on the shelves and they would truck no influence from an outside official and on the strength of this 'no' answer Ms Palin had the librarian fired? Who was hired/moved into her/his position? Was it someone who was hand picked by Ms Palin, were they asked the same question? Did they say yes? Has Ms Palin ever asked for any books in any library to be removed from the shelves? Could a librarian ever make this decision on their own anyway?

I am not sure if this is a real argument or a false one. While the idea that a VP would behave in this whimsical fashion is certainly somewhat worrying, is it clear that she would because she did?

More facts required I would think.

Here is what happened:

a). Palin comes into office - and it was a close race.

B). She looks around and sees all the people appointed by her predecessor, decides she wants people loyal to her, not the other guy (small town, remember).

c). Fires all the people she can easily fire with no questions asked - including the police chief (and admits because he disagreed with her on some issues).

d). For some reason, decides it is important to find out if the librarian is "with her" or "against her" and, by Palin's admission, gives the librarian a "loyalty test". Asks if, at some point in the future, if Palin requests books be removed, would the librarian comply? Librarian says no.

e). Palin later fires librarian a short time after this - never asking for books to actually be removed.

f). As librarian is quite popular in community, chaos ensues. Complaints follow. Librarian is later re-instated to position.

That's what happened.

Palin is well known to go off firing people on a whim and for reasons not necessarily related to actual job performance. However, in this case at least, at no times was the request to remove books from library actually made.

Thank you, that makes sense and doesn't make her a more pallatable choice, even if we can't label her a 'book burner'

She is a bible thumping religious nutcase. That's pretty much all you need to know. I hope she does become VP. The sooner we get her out of Alaska, the better.

Thanks for that video AJ.

From that video I got two facts.

  • Palin once campaigned at an extreme christian church.
  • Palin currently attends a non-denominational church.
So she's a Unitarian, but the newspaper reports state she is Lutheran.

Unitarian is a more blase christian which can get away with pretty much anything as they are border line agnostics, and they also accept all religions into their churches. Lutheran is also good based off of Martin Luther and the 95 articles he posted to do something about the "buy your way into heaven" coupons that the Catholics were selling called, "indulgences", which the Church used the funds from the spruce up the churches. Martin Luther sent his 95 complaints to his friends who used mass printing as a form of publication and it spread like wildfire leading him into a head on collision with the Pope. The first printers were the real capitalists being able to reproduce "faster and cheaper" then penmanship.

Words became definitive and with that you could not plead ignorance anymore. Society became the "Never mind the fancy chat, show me," attitude.
