Cost of heating a greenhouse is likely to be greater than the cost of just buying tomatoes. They're raising rates again soon, I think January 1 by another 20% ):

What you can have though is community greenhouse so other people can grow their veggies with youa nd then split the cost of teh greenhouse and running it. Of course, do it with people you trust though or your veggies will come up missing!!:( Just a thought anyways

for milk, does the taste of milk that has been frozen differ greatly from the fresh?

I dunno - this might be novel - don't buy it, go without tomatoes.

Or - drive to the Matanuska Valley and buy a giant tomato. Surely that will last a month or two.

Somewhat, but IMHO it's not enough to bother me.

Well, duh. Doesn't change the fact that tomatoes have become very expensive (:

As for milk - it could reach $100/gallon for all I care.

Yeah, prices vary by location. If places feel they can get more money, they will charge more money.

well that, and the fact that tons of tomatoes got chucked due to the ecoli scare earlier this summer. Less product on the market + regular demand = higher prices.

Last night I went to the grocery store to get a tomato last night. Now, it was rather on the large side, but still - it was $3.34 for one tomato!!! At that price, I'm going to have to make it last. Ugh.

OMG.........and I freaked out when they were almost $1 each.

We've been going down to the local farmer's market. Much better deals and no middle men.

I have a feeling that akdiver may have picked up a "hothouse" tomato (more expensive) and then freaked out, without checking against the "regular" ones.

(btw, the $0.99 price was not in a farmers' market, or low demand--but a zoo-crowded Asian grocer)

I dunno man. There didn't seem to be anything special about this particular tomato. However, I will say that I didn't look around - I saw a tomato display and I grabbed a tomato and went on my merry way. Even still, over $3 for a tomato is a lot, no matter how special the tomato may be.

By the way, I made that tomato last 3 days. It is gone now.
