Last night I went to the grocery store to get a tomato last night. Now, it was rather on the large side, but still - it was $3.34 for one tomato!!! At that price, I'm going to have to make it last. Ugh.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I live in Alaska. It is highly unlikely that I would be able to keep myself in tomatoes, no matter how hard I tried.

That's why they developed hybrids for your climate. You actually could grow them there at least for the summer season without help, winter under lights.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Maybe I could rent a warehouse, set it up with a bunch of lights and drive out there every day to check on them and make sure no one has stolen them....

You could also set up a drug cartel and run it from that warehouse. Make a lot more money and those tomatoes won't be so expensive.

That's done a lot more frequently up here than you think. They've busted some pretty large operations.

After an investigation, I bet they'll find it was headed by Sarah Palin, who had a threesome affair with Ted Stevens and a moose.

Only on visajourney could someone combine threesomes and tomatoes.......but to each their own I guess:)

I hate the cost of tomatoes:( I thought about growing my own in the backyard (I live in an apt though) but I don't have time to take care of them. I actually tried that one yeaar and well, I got no tomatoes. Thats how I know:)

I love the fresh ones better than the canned (especially on my burritos!!) but I guess I will have to start to buy canned since it is more cheap than fresh!:(

Seriously though, a small greenhouse might be the answer for growing tomatoes in your climate. $3.34 for ONE tomato is incredibly ridiculous!

I too love tomatoes and other veggies. The price of fresh food (homegrown, organic, etc) has risen all over the place. It's coming down to us growing our own and we're looking into the possibility of a small greenhouse. Nothing fancy, just one that would do the job.

In other food news...milk....gawd! One gallon of Mayfield milk here in our area is running about $6.20 a gallon. Which is why we buy store brand...it runs about $4.10 a gallon. Unfortunately we can't have a cow in our backyard...

tomatoes will grow inside, or on a balcony.

If you have even a small backyard you could get a little greenhouse set up too and grow right thru winter if you heat it, even in Alaska I'd guess. Tomatoes are easy. Don't need much work really, just have to remember to water them and see that they have light.

The price of milk is stupid!! Here it's about $5 a gallong even for store brand I'm pretty sure. Last week though I was in heaven. Store brand went on sale for a whopping $2.99!!! I have not seen it that cheap in AGES! If milk did not have an expiration date, I would have stocked up! But I only bought a gallon. Otherwise, it would all go bad!!:(

There is a solution to this. You can buy milk and freeze it. It does require you to open it and take a small bit out beforehand since liquids expand when frozen. When you do use it, it's not like buying it right off the shelf at the moment, but it's still good. Of course, this is assuming you have freezer space to do this. I can store at least two gallons in my side by side freezer side.
