I was really depressed for awhile because I had applied for 7 or 8 jobs and so far had 2 rejections and one job that simply wasn't a good fit.

Well, over the course of the past day I have schedule FOUR interviews, 2 this week by phone, 2 next week in person with 4 different, high profile organizations.

If I don't manage to get a job after this I will be SEVERELY bummed. It would be very nice to have a job all organized before my AOS interview later in June!

Thanks so much you guys!

Well it's interesting you mention that job where they didn't get back to me for three weeks. I got a call from a head hunter who got my name from those very people! Apparently I made a very good impression on them, and according to the head hunter I was overqualified for that particular job. I find that hard to believe, but who knows? It was very nice of them to pass my name along though. :)

Anyway, I had my first of the 4 interviews today by phone. I am used to interviewing in person...it's very tricky not seeing their expressions! The interview was a little over an hour long. Overall, it went pretty well, it was relaxed and conversational. The problem for me is remembering the nitty gritty budget details from jobs I did many years ago. It makes me sound innept, but I honestly can't remember! The worst part though was where she said "Let me get this straight, because I don't see it on here.....you don't have a college degree?!?!?!?" :o

Apparently that really matters to some organizations, and not to others. She isn't sure what the stance is of this particular one, so she will ask them. The earliest she can get back to me about this job is the 2nd of June. She says she will be very honest with me as to where I stand, and she just asks that once I have finished my interviews if this job ranks 4th out of my list of job preferences that I let her know.

At the end I asked her for feedback and she said that the only thing she would recommend is that I quantify how my efforts have affected the bottom line as much and as specifically as possible, but in general I did a very good job. She says the biggest issues she sees are the frequent moving around I did (although she understands the reasons for it), and the lack of degree. However, she says these are "yellow flags" and not by any means a deal breaker as my experience is so good. Very interesting and somewhat encouraging feedback from someone who recruits executives (Directors and above usually) in the nonprofit field so close to where I live!!! At the very least if I'm not right for this particular job, she knows all about me and she might find something good for me in the future.

This whole degree thing....the reason I don't have one is I went straight from full time dance training to working, my career took off and the need/opportunity to go to college never came up! I really can't afford the $$$ to go to school in the US. I sure hope someone will prefer my 10 years of experience to a degree.

I will keep you all updated and pass along any mojo I can! (F)

I find it silly how some places want you to have that degree. I know many people with those fancy degrees that can't fight themselves out of a wet paper bag!! Best of luck.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Good luck to you. Though a degree means nothing to me personally, I knew how much it means to others (recruiters and bosses who don't know your work personally.) It is very hard to convince someone of your abilities and potential when they can see that you never went the way of the college degree that most professionals do.

I decided very early on to get a US degree and managed to get into an MBA program. After that I had no luck finding a job  but my last employer from which I eventually retired required a degree and many jobs that I got (promotions) were never a problem because they could see I had an MBA and a CPA - qualifications they know and respect. So, I started at the entry level and retired from mid-management.

Having said that I don't think it made too much of a difference in my own capabilities of doing the various jobs I held but others felt more confident in me when they saw my applications and the 1.5 years of college (with loans) was absolutely worth it. And I have told many of the people who have worked for me to get their degree (evening classes or scheduling work around the classes) as eventually it will make a difference in how high in the organization they will end up. Good Luck

I'm going to university now. Is it going to make me a better person? I'm sure it wont hurt, lol A fair amount of courses one is required to take to complete a degree does goto waste in some respect. Yes knowledge is great, but why pay $$ for something you most likely won't use!! I personally learn a lot better with hands on experience. Oh well, with continue school and get that degree. My point was that a degree doesnt really make 1 a better (smarter) person than 1 with out a degree. Being older I'm in with some pretty young people and amazed how clueless they are, but they already have this or that degree, and yes they are more marketable than I!! lol 15 yrs of Armed Forces time is ok, but still not as marketable as a degree. Enjoy the long weekend and give some time to give thanks to the veterans.
