I am kind of curious about this whole "McCain picked Palin because she is a woman is sexist" argument. I think if a man came to the ticket with energy+reform+outside washington credentials he was considered too. Which is why Bobby Jindal was considered - but he was even younger and less experienced. He was probably mentioned many more times than Palin, and I never heard anyone criticize his lack of experience. In fact, it was considered a bonus against the veteran McCain.

While I think it's pretty offensive that I would only vote for someone with a uterus, I'm finding it far more offensive that my intelligence should be insulted with the kind of scare tactics used about Sarah Palin because of abortion. I have been doing a lot of research on Nexus this afternoon, and it seems many of the things I have been told about her are false or overreaching.

I think what you are seeing going on is exactly what happened to Obama. Both Palin and Obama are not only firsts, but were both relatively unknown by the rest of the country at the time the entered into the presidential race. The media has been running rampid trying to find out as much as they can about Palin just as what happened with Obama, and there are yellow journalists who've exploited this media feeding frenzy by reporting yellow journalism.

This is the reality of the information age...although we now have a zillion resources at our fingertips, or mouses, we've now got to do a lot more filtering of disinformation, misinformation, sensationalism and flat out lies. About the only way to take away credibility to some of the yellow journalism we've seen in the race going all the way back to the Primaries, is to name the source and the journalist. Write them an email or letter and let the news organization that they represent know that we won't sit idly and let them continue to publish such shoddy journalism. Outside of that, I don't know what else you can do, but certainly giving some of the more absurd and sillier accusations or arguments any attention beyond attacking the source only fans the flames.

I know that - but a lot of people here on VJ are buying into all of this stuff. There are more people here convinced Palin tried to ban books or is "promoting creationism be taught in school" than the number of people who think Obama is a muslim. Judging by the number of posts that is.

Maybe, but outside this little cosmos of ours, what really counts is what the rest of the country thinks and this is scary:

Ten percent of American voters believe Sen. Barack Obama is Muslim, despite the presidential candidate's frequent descriptions of his Christian faith and a high-profile flap over his former pastor.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2008...ma-muslim_N.htm

.....

And you know there are media outlets like World Nut Daily who just revel in that knowing full well how baseless it is. Those kinds of sources are the ones we should be directing our anger towards, instead of making generalizations about Republicans or Democrats in general.

Yes - I am also talking to people and watching the media. I think it may be fairly representative of a POV.

All I'm saying is you can't have it both ways - complaining about the WorldNet news and Fox, and then saying nothing when certain people re-post the daily output of posts of the DailyKos, which has been especially terrible.

I don't usually read DailyKos, but one source that I've always liked was the Carpet Bagger Report by Steven Benen, because in addition to what I think is consistently good journalism, he cites his sources as hypertext links. I don't think DailyKos has a reputation for the sensational...they might, but I haven't read or seen anything by media watchdog groups.

If someone posts some allegation that is baseless, I'd call them on it - find out the source and then expose that source as baseless. I think the dust will finally settle some regarding Palin as we move towards the election, however, you can expect that should anything surface which could impact people's perception of her, the media will be all over it. That's just the way it is.

They were the source for the Bristol is Trig's mother stories. Absolutely disgusting rumors repeated by several in the mainstream press.

Hopefully they'll retract what they published and make a formal apology....particularly if they wanted to be regarded as a reliable news source.

Interesting, are you saying then that Palin is not keen to introduce creationism in schools and she never tried to have any books banned or a librarian sacked? If true, all well and good. It is true that I didn't research this particularly thoroughly and confess I relied on the A.J propoganda machine. What is Nexus?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Nexus is an online database of newspaper stories. I have a subscription through work. I found nothing about banning books. I have found articles referencing the librarian being fired along with several other city officials in the cost-cutting exercise.

Reason website (fairly critical of both parties and balanced) have weighed in:

http://www.reason.com/convention2008/show/128552.html

this touches on creationism

http://reason.com/convention2008/show/128485.html

Palin doesn't believe creationism should be part of the curriculum but that it can be a topic of debate

this is a view I happen to hold, btw

Also interesting to note (as has been noted in other threads) Alaska does not require parental consent on abortion - a law she has done nothing to restrict as governor.

R, you might find this informative...

What is Daily Kos?

Who is kos?

"Kos" is the US-Army/screen nickname of the founder of Daily Kos, Markos Alberto Moulitsas Zúniga. (See also the in-progress dkospedia entry Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, and the Wikipedia pages Kos and Markos Moulitsas Zúniga.)

What is the purpose of this site?

(Condensed from this diary written by kos in late 2004)

This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together. We happily embrace centrists like NDN's Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama. Liberal? Yeah, we're around here and we're proud. But it's not a liberal blog. It's a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory. And since we haven't gotten any of that from the current crew, we're one more thing: a reform blog. The battle for the party is not an ideological battle. It's one between establishment and anti-establishment factions. And as I've said a million times, the status quo is untenable

Who speaks for this site?

(from <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/12/12/122234/81" class="external text" title="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/12/12/122234/81" rel="nofollow">Who "represents" Daily Kos? by kos, Tue Dec 12, 2006 at 09:35:47 AM PST)

... here's a quick rundown on who can "represent" Daily Kos. First of all, no one speaks for Daily Kos other than me. Period. Those who could be said to "represent" the site are the following Contributing Editors:
  • BarbinMD
  • Darksyde
  • DavidNYC
  • DeminCT
  • Devilstower
  • DHinMI
  • Hunter (fellow)
  • Georgia10
  • KagroX
  • Mcjoan (fellow)
  • Meteor Blades
  • MissLaura
  • Plutonium Page
  • SusanG (fellow)
  • Trapper John
On tech matters, Jeremy also "represents" the site. That's it. Update: Actually, that's not it. One more: Adam B. represents the site in regulatory and legal matters, and is also an occasional contributor on such issues.

Jeremy's user name is 'ct'.

Who posts here?

The quick answer is "anyone who wants to". There are a wide variety of people writing diaries and comments on dkos. They include elected politicians, candidates hoping to become elected politicians, experts in a range of fields, and active bloggers from around the net. The vast majority of writers, however, are ordinary citizens interested in talking about and participating in the political process. The majority of people posting here fall on the liberal side of the US political spectrum, however people of conservative views are welcome to come and debate. If you are polite, you will be treated politely. Unfortunately, there are some people who post comments or diaries with the sole purpose of provoking others. These people are called trolls. Some tips and techniques for dealing with trolls are described below.

I know all about steve - all the major Democratic candidates spoke at their convention. It has "mainstream" credibility and is considered influental.

Remember that silly lie that Clinton "darkened" Obamas skin in an ad that later got debunked (although most Obama fans here believed it)? Daily Kos.....

Oh yes!

An age old tactic. I'm not surprised.

Yes. I'm not surprised after the photo of Obama wearing Somalian formal dress or his name being mispelled, Osama. It'd be nice if Hillary would be bold enough to come out and say she won't stand for such tactics, but she won't, so if some of it gets linked to her camp...even if her camp didn't do it, she takes in part of the blame.

And that's an important distinction. Such tactics should be condemned alone, separate from whether they are coming from Hillary's camp or from her supporters. Obama has taken the high road on such dirty politics. I hope he stays that way, but it sure is helping Hillary...or nobody would have bothered to spread that photo of Obama wearing traditional Somalian clothes.
