 Hello everyone! How are you? I have been helped by this community so much. I really appreciate everyone's comments.

I wonder what your first job in the US was. I know it is very hard not only to work in the US, but also with a different language, culture and custom. I am from really countryside and now I am in the big city. I am still having a hard time adjusting it. Now, I started job hunting. I really feel uncomfortable when my husband gives me high expectations because I have a BA from American university. However, I was in my home country for whole 2 years after graduation.

It will be very appreciated if you give me your experience;)

Your first job will be your most difficult find.... The problem is a lack of US work history... You may end up accepting a lower level position than what you would normally do, but remember that it is only short term.... After you establish yourself, then the next true opportunity will be much easier.

YMMV

I was having a problem getting work here in the US, the jobs are there, it's just that the employers have a large pool to pick from now with all thats going on since the credit crunch.

I have managed to secure a job with a hotel group, it's not the job I wanted to do, but I have found that it has it's benefits, in the 3 weeks that I have been working for the hotel group as a driver with a low wage I have seen how much you can make on top in just tips alone ! I've been getting on some days as much as $20.00 in tips on average, the best days tips was $50.00 - this has alowed me to leave funds in my bank account alone in the past weeks, not had to touch a cent for fuel or food, used the tip money for that ! In the last 3 weeks I've saved close to $1000 dollars in my account and next week I'll be getting paid ($800.00) and I will not need to dip into it until the house bills come in (small outlay of $300.00 - $400.00 every month). If I add the average tips to my wage per month it works out to around $1900.00 - $2000.00 :o

work at a company that can use your bilingual skills. just start anywhere. then you can move up!

Great idea. :)

I have managed to secure a job with a hotel group

And a good example.

Another idea, if you live in a city with language schools, is to apply at those schools. In addition to teachers, they need office staff and perhaps an activities coordinator. You could also apply at organizations or offices for immigrants or international students. They'll value your understanding of different cultures as well as your being bilingual.

You should try to get your foot in the door with a temp agency.

My very first job was Vice President (then President) of the Student Government.

My first "real job" was a temp to perm for a manufacturing company.

I now work for the State. You need to build up American working experiences and then move up to whatever you desire.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

I will be a RN-IP this Tuesday (have intermit permit to work as an RN under supervision) and have already signed a contract to work for a local hospital here for 15 months. I have not yet passed my board exam for my license in California and I plan to take my board exam this late October.

My first job here is as a part time receptionist. I have applied for hundreds of jobs since Feb 08 and I have had 3 unsuccessful interviews. I got my job now by lowering my expectations - any job is good just so you can add US work experience to your resume.

I got my current job by sending out a letter to a number of companies saying that I would be willing to work in my field for free to get the experience, or take any part time work they may have for a low wage. Funny thing was, I sent that letter out to about 30 companies and I was only contacted by one. But, that's better than none!

Since I didn't see any VJ-specific restriction on it....

My first job in US was as stockroom (Dept. of Chemistry) clerk/attendant at Central Michigan University while I was a grad student.

McDonald's Grill Chef - Dec 2005

Software test contractor with a CCTV company - Mar 2006

Currently Test Team Leader, permanent, with the same company.

After starting at McDonald's I put my resume online. Got contacted by an agent for the contractor job and went with the flow from there. I would definitely recommend taking anything (legal!) just to start earning and then putting your resume online, on as many sites as you can find. If nothing else it maximises your chances of someone seeing it. And if you are willing to relocate then that will increase your chances also.

Someone once told me that by the time most jobs appear in the newspapers, the position has already been filled so going online is the best way of maxmizing your opportunities.

Good luck.

Thank you so much everyone. It is wonderful.

Yes, it is so hard to get a job in the US sometimes. My first part time job was a barista at cafe on campus. I was a student at university. After graduation, I returned to my homecountry.

Well, I have no idea what I can do. But I am thinking about getting a job which helps me to improve my English. Even though I have a BA, it does not really matter. I have to accept any kinds of jobs. I need to save money until my husband goes back to grad school.

Anyone has sales jobs???
