McCain's RNC speech

I don't like seeing McCain's POW experience diminished. Although I'm not voting for him, this is how the Economist positions it:

Mr Obama may write eloquently about the agony of trying to work out how a mixed-race kid fits into America’s racial mosaic, but Mr McCain has endured actual physical torture: having his ribs cracked and his teeth knocked out and being stuck in solitary confinement for shouting obscenities at his jailers. None of this necessarily means he would make a good president. But it makes people take him seriously when he says he serves a cause greater than his own self-interest.

It's getting old frankly, and we never seem to hear how he caved and signed a confession (he did). I would not blame him under what were surely horrendous circumstances, but if he's going to make himself out to be a superhero (or let other people do it for him), we should be entitled to hear the whole truth.

It's getting to the point where I expect him to say "Hi, I'm John McCain. Wanna see my scars from 'Nam?"

I think you misunderstand me - I don't think McCain's POW experience should be diminished and I'm certainly not suggesting he's lying or exaggerating about his experiences.

I am saying that spending countless hours trumping up war stories at a political convention does absolutely nothing (nada, zip, zilch) to address the concerns of voting Americans.

Its a part of the campaign marketing - and as such I think I'm right to be a little suspicious about it.

Which we hear from the other day would be a perfectly justifiable criticism - in regards to the Ann Coulter comments about John Edwards.

People who are offended by this sort of thing should realise that this line of argument demeans themselves and does them no favors. Of course they only care when its someone they like and identify with...

you people kill me. If Obama had experienced the unimaginable abuse and torture that McCain has endured whilst serving his country selflessly, you would be shouting it from the rooftops. If indeed Obama had served his country instead of smoking dope and snorting coke, I would have far more respect for him.

The sad thing is no - I really wouldn't.
