If you read the instructions for the N400 application, they will tell you everything you need to know (which is to look at the document checklist).

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

Grab the form, the instructions and the document checklist - you'll be all set.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Thanks, guys. I woke up this morning thinking I wanted to look into what I should start saving over this next year.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Just one thing to know...the prep for the N-400 is very easy. It is very different from the Removing Conditions phase - you will not need any pictures or affidavits.

You will need to send a copy of PR card front/back, 2 passport photos and the check to DHS.

In addition to that, you will need these four items:

Evidence that your spouse has been a U.S. citizen for the last three years:

Birth certificate (if your spouse never lost citizenship since birth), or Naturalization Certificate, or

Certificate of Citizenship, or The inside of the front cover and signature page of your spouse's current U.S. passport, or Form FS-240, "Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America," and

Your current marriage certificate, and

Proof of termination of all prior marriages of your spouse - divorce decree(s), annulment(s), or death certificate(s); and

Documents referring to you and your spouse: Tax returns, bank accounts, leases, mortgages, or birth certificates of children, or Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - certified copies of the income tax forms that you both filed for the past three years, or an IRS tax return transcript for the last three years.

Good luck to everyone! It can be done.

I'll just be glad when all the paperwork is done forever. Seems like it just takes over your life.

Also, if you've been married before, include proof of termination of all your prior marriages. Don't forget the passport pictures too.

Lastly, be sure to keep track of all your trips overseas. You won't be required to submit any documentation but the N400 form requires that you list all of the trips and the dates/duration.

Lastly, be sure to keep track of all your trips overseas. You won't be required to submit any documentation but the N400 form requires that you list all of the trips and the dates/duration.

Always an exception, wife's interviewer wanted to see her passports and compare the dates we wrote down to her books, isn't that requiring documentation? Or was she checking our ability to copy dates from her passport to the form?

We were with Nebraska/St. Paul sent in the application first class mail from central WI 29Mar2008, they received it 31Mar2008, biometric in Milwaukee forgot the date but was around three weeks later, interview at St. Paul 17July2008, and oath ceremony also in St. Paul 3Sep2008.

That is 5 months, 5 days from start to finish, but those 48 days between the interview and oath ceremony seemed quite long especially when several here reporting saying the oath right after the interview, got my senator to do an inquiry, or we will still be waiting.

So how does one choose a good reasonable interviewer?

NickD, discussion was about what documents to submit with the N400. The form does not require any documentation of travel overseas to be submitted. However, this documentation may be required by the IO during the interview, as your experience has shown.
