Criminal Record in China

My wife lived in China for 2 years 2004-2006 working as a Japanese teacher at a Chinese University. On the web page on the NVC website

http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/reciproc...ocity_3537.html

it says under police records "(or certain types of employers such as state owned enterprises)."

Can they help her obtain her non-criminal record without her having to go to China? I think it's ridiculous to think she'll have to travel to China.

And if she does have to go to China, the visa as tourist is only valid for 2 weeks. Is that enough time for a report to be made for a little town Jilin and then the other town she lived in the second year Dalian?

We're trying to figure out how to do this so she won't have to go to China.

The next confusing thing is that it seems according to the website that a notary of the document is necessary. But I called today to the NVC and they told me strongly that a notary of the non-criminal record is NOT necessary, clearly understanding I was asking about the case of China.

Also, my wife thinks she read somewhere that the record will be sealed in an envelope and she should not open it. Well, it's in Chinese, and it has to be Translated into English. She thinks she read on the Embassy website that she can't open it.

I think it doesn't matter since the NVC just told me...."Sir, all we need is a copy of the non-criminal record. A notary of it is not possible. However, it will need to be translated, and the translation must be notarized."

So I interpret is as being that we might can get the record sent over, and then she can have a Chinese friend in Japan who understands English to translate the document.

But the sealed envelope thing has got us confused. Plus, at the end at the interview at the embassy, does the embassy once again need a sealed non-criminal record? So does this mean we have to obtain 2 non-criminal records from China.

Thank you for any help you can give on all these questions.

Try contacting the Chinese embassy in Japan for answers. I think they could be quite helpful.

You might also try posting this in a different forum from Europe.

What was her visa class? According to the website, The GOC does not issue police records for temporary residents of China in L or F visa categories.

YMMV
