37 Million Watched Palin

ST. PAUL -- The McCain campaign must be giddy with this news, just out from Nielsen: Sarah Palin's speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just a 1.1 million viewers fewer than watch Barak Obama's Invesco Field acceptance speech. As Nielsen notes, only six networks carried Palin's speech compared with ten for Obama's.

The likely scenario here is that the same people watched both speeches.

37 million watched Palin's acceptance speech in U.S.

Published: Thursday, September 04, 2008

LOS ANGELES - More than 37 million U.S. TV viewers tuned in to watch Sarah Palin accept the Republican nomination for vice president Wednesday, just shy of the record set last week by Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, Nielsen Media Research reported.

Nielsen has said the 38.4 million viewers averaged by Obama's address last Thursday are believed to be the biggest television audience ever for a U.S. political convention speech, and Palin's tally of 37.2 million came close to that.

But she easily surpassed the 27.6 million viewers drawn by President Bush at the end of the Republican National Convention in 2004, when he was nominated for a second term.

The high tune-in for Palin was no doubt bolstered by the high curiosity factor surrounding the first-term Alaska governor, who was thrust from obscurity onto the national stage last Friday when she was named John McCain's surprise pick for a running mate.

I'm really torn on this.

On one hand, I don't want any of the "top four" to ever be president.

On the other other hand, the sooner Sarah Palin gets the hell out of Alaska, the happier I will be.

On the other other other hand, I wish she had never gotten involved. I prefer to keep Alaska out of the news, otherwise, the next thing you know it, more Americans will start figuring out exactly where Alaska is (rather than being a small island next to Hawaii, as shown on most maps) and start coming up here. That's not a good thing. I mean, if it is called "tourist season" then why the hell can't you shoot them? And if they actually RELOCATE here, well, that's just BAD. Better for them to relocate to (or stay in) California.

I think the whole thing sucks ):

Cheers!

Americans love drama. The moment McCain announced Palin as his running mate it has been non stop drama (or fabricated drama...but that doesn't mean anything - why do you think Star magazine is so popular?)

I am definitely not a Sarah fan, but she did very well. But I was a little confused about her talking about shrinking government, when our operating budget in Alaska has ballooned since 2006...oh well, minor details.

Well, to be fair, when you have a lot more money, you can spend a lot more money. Esp. when you're passing out some $2B in welfare all in the month of September. But hey, I'm not complaining. At least it is welfare I actually qualify for this time.

 True, I don't know how many students I've had over the years who truly had no concept of where Hawaii or Alaska was until they saw a globe!

I think a great number of people turned in out of curiosity. I didn't watch any of them on tv, but that doesn't mean I'm not voting (and I already know who I'm voting for, the VP choice won't make a difference to me).

It's curious though how women who were pro-Hillary can just switch allegiances to Palin. They aren't at all similar in regards to anything but their anatomy.
