A dose of reality.

GREAT video. Very revealing.

Republicans caught with their pants down. Nothing surprising here. ;)

John Edwards & his babymama says what? Or Spitzer? Or Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick?

Since when are Democrats the epitome of the morally haughty? It's the Republicans who are so engaged about gay marriage, statutory rape/child porn, teenage pregnancy, abortion, etc. Seems they can't even follow their own stupid moral rules.

The irony here is, Palin's daughter is the best representation of a Baby Mama. Not married, and no one even knows the guy -- clearly a "wups" moment, opposed to the married Obama's. :D Thanks for the reminder, though.

When I was listening to her speak, my thought was that she was not a good public speaker. I can understand why--she woke up and she was the veep pick for the republican party. However, this appears to be the party saying, oh no! She wasn't very polished last night so we better do what we do best--Quick! Someone generate a smoke screen cover story explaining why she sucked. What is funny is I didn't think she sucked until I read this article. I chalked it up to nerves/excitement. But now-she sucked. Cowboy/cowgirl up and just get it done. If you gotta make up a story to try to expain something (that probably didn't even happen) then, you suck.

I see that some people... they'll vote for either party as long as one of the candidates shares their gender.

I have to agree that there are definitely some very, ahem, outspoken people here on VJ who seem to flip flop in the wind when it comes to their party. "I'll stand by the party no matter what." Uh huh. And God forbid you call them on it....dear lord. They just throw some patronizing BS at you and pretend you never gave any facts. Fascinating study of human nature, really.

And this is relevant news how, exactly???

Because she can actually think and speak her mind I guess...

I think it's pretty lame that talking without a prompter suddenly becomes a WOW factor.

Seriously, I do it in front of 120 people every day, in front of 1000 occasionally and I never get a teleprompter. Hell, half the time I don't need notes.

Since I can do that and I have a #######, may I run for public office?

Sorry, I'm not actually attacking Palin, because I'm pretty much annoyed by the attacking on both sides, but I do reserve the right to mock those who make silly comments. :)

You're probably doing those general ed. 101 lecture classes. Those are kids you'll be grading anyway. But imagine you're applying for Provost or Chancellor position and doing a presentation to the university community in an auditorium and your Powerpoint crashed in the middle of the presentation. :star:

Woop de doo.

She's a former beauty queen and sportscaster. It's not like she's never had public speaking experience before. Good for her that she was able to pull it off, but it isn't a miraculous feat considering her background.

And oh yeah - I've spoken to crowds of people also. Approximately 4000 one year at a convention - eight rotating sessions of about 500 people attending in each. Without a freaking teleprompter.

It's sad how people think: teleprompter or not, what real issues did she discuss? Watching her deliver this “well-crafted” speech with such relish just underlined the fact that dignity and erudition are not high priorities for her – in her own words, “a pit bull with lipstick.” Delivering mean-spirited, misleading zingers at such an auspicious occasion is not really a great example to set for young women. I feel out-of-step in wanting a leader who is well-educated, dignified, and is someone I can look up to and trust to deal with world leaders with intelligence, tact and diplomacy.

Here's a view from a woman.

A very poignant excerpt:

"Why does this woman [...] deserve, to a unique extent among political women, to rank as so “real”?

Because the Republicans, very clearly, believe that real people are idiots. This disdain for their smarts shows up in the whole way they’ve cast this race now, turning a contest over economic and foreign policy into a culture war of the Real vs. the Elites. It’s a smoke and mirrors game aimed at diverting attention from the fact that the party’s tax policies have helped create an elite that’s more distant from “the people” than ever before. And from the fact that the party’s dogged allegiance to individualism — an individualism exemplified by Palin, the frontierswoman who somehow has managed to “balance” five children and her political career with no need for support — is leading to a culture-wide crack-up."

I agree. The above argument is very compelling.

This from David Brooks

And what was most impressive was her speech’s freshness. Her words flowed directly from her life experience, her poise and mannerisms from her town and its conversations. She left behind most of the standard tropes of Republican rhetoric (compare her text to the others) and skated over abortion and the social issues. There wasn’t even any tired, old Reagan nostalgia.

Instead, her language resonated more of supermarket aisle than the megachurch pulpit. More than the men on the tickets, she embodies the spirit of the moment: impatient, fed up, tough-minded, but ironical. Even in attack, she projected the cheerfulness of someone confident about the future.

In those 40 minutes, the forces of reform Republicanism took control, at least for a time. Republicans started talking about Palin, Bobby Jindal and a brighter future for their party.

In his own speech on Thursday, McCain showed that he is not naturally the smoothest of speakers. He did not have an over-arching story to describe how the world has changed in the 21st century and how government must adapt.

He did not lay out a new doctrine to give shape to his administration. Bill Clinton had a new Democratic agenda to describe how his party would evolve, and in 2000, George W. Bush had compassionate conservatism. McCain had nothing like that. He did not offer as transformational a domestic policy agenda as one would have liked.

But he described traditional conservatism-plus: low taxes and free markets with some activism built on top; compensating workers for lost wages when plants close; a grand national project for energy independence. Through it all, he communicated his burning indignation at the way Washington has operated over the last 12 years. He communicated his intense passion to lift government to a plane the country deserves. He did note that he has fought to change the Republican Party during its period of decay. And he diagnosed that decay Thursday night (to the tepid applause of the faithful).

And this passion for change, combined with his proven and evident integrity, led to the crescendo of raw energy that marked this convention’s conclusion.

Since people must not have read my link, let me summarize for you:

Sarah Palin's teleprompter did NOT malfunction. A reporter had an angle where he could clearly see the teleprompter. He looked at it often and at no time was it functioning abnormally.

Lots of hate in this thread - all for a woman you don't know & probably never will.

I don't hate her. I do think she is very unqualified to be President, and her political and religious stances are very objectionable. And that's probably the only reason you really like her, since she's an Xtian conservative like you. There are also lots of questions about her behavior as mayor and governor that will likely show this was a very poor choice. She pressured the Wasilla library to ban books she felt had profane language. She had a state commissioner fired who refused to fire a state trooper who divorced her sister.

We've known about her for, what, a week? This is just scratching the surface.
