I saw Obama speak. It was the day of the VT shooting. It was originally planned as a rally, but was switched to reflect the more sombre mood of the day. Obama came on, without teleprompters, and spoke for 30mins on violence in America. If any of it was scripted, he would have had to have written it - or had it written - within a couple of hours and then memorised it. I doubt that. That, for me, was a better indication of the man than the razzamatazz I was expecting.

I see that some people... they'll vote for either party as long as one of the candidates shares their gender.

As I've said before.... Americans are stupid and vote for those they identify with, not with who will best address their needs.

Turn about is fair play. You only see what you want to see. It's not about black, white, man, or women. I've heard Obama say we're going to create jobs, we're going to work on our foreign and domestic policy but lets sit down and talk about it because it's complicated. If addressing our needs is a leader that gives long winded explinations coming out their azz then they might as well kick people in the heads keeping them in suspense for four more years. There isn't going to be any radical change like they are promising because the nature of the beast is democracy that they're dealing with which is a slow moving institution. McCain and Palin acknowledged that last night and called Obama and Biden on it.

In a small community, these are the kinds of things that really ARE news.

So last night, as I watched Palin’s debut on the national stage, something struck me. First, of course, she was polished and poised and handling her new found celebrity with confidence. She even pulled off an ad lib that was her greatest laugh line of the night. In response to the homemade “Hockey Moms for Palin” signs that were being held aloft, she said, “I love those hockey moms. You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick!” (thunderous laughter and applause from the crowd)

Now let me share with you another of those headline stories from three weeks ago:

Child Taken Off Life Support After Pit Bull Attack.

This was the big news story in Alaska for several days that week. A child and her babysitter were viciously attacked by the family pet pit bull. The owner surrendered the dog, waited for the girls father to return from his deployment in Iraq, and watched as his six-year-old daughter was taken off life support after she went into an irreversably vegetative state.

I don’t know how other Alaska residents felt about the pit bull joke, and obviously her audience loved it, but most of us here in “small town America” probably didn’t find it particularly funny. "

I've said this several times - Palin has a coherent plan for energy which she touched on last night. She has been consistently - without a script or a teleprompter - in the business press talking about it persuasively and articulately for the past 6 months (that I've noticed). And I generally disagree with her zeal for drilling.

She has raised taxes on oil companies and given the voters $1200 in energy credits.

I'm not gonna vote for her. But the way she has been outrightly dismissed by people who were probably more than a little rattled this morning has been very interesting to me.

Incidentally, she has never introduced any legislation to promote abstitence or limit contraception. She mentioned "god" far fewer times in her speech than Barack Obama in his.

This isn't terribly surprising - given that the Republican party is the natural home of the religious right. There's more to it than just mentioning God - but certainly this is one area where a lot of pandering is done.
