If they read poems, then perhaps that's exactly how they intended it. Lots of couples are doing non traditional things. All that really matters is that legal piece of paper. To my knowledge, there is nothing else that has to be said or done (aside from a witness).

We didn't even need witnesses in our civil ceremony - had them all lined up, too!

:) there were no vows at our wedding. We did not even have to say "I do"..... the priest said MUCH but we did not have to say any words at all. If you do not want to get married then why are you there in the first place? It is implied that YOU DO and that you promise all that. It does depend on religion, customs...

The way to find out if you love someone or not, is by talking to them.

The more you talk to them the more you either hate them or love them.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

we had a non-convential wedding ... although we still wore traditional dress and we read 'vows' we had written to each other. we didn't include i promise to this and promise to that. we just spoke the words from our heart. the officiant did a brief 'thingie' when we exchanged our rings and said 'i do' and that was it!

weddings can REALLY be exactly as you want them nowadays!

Since Dave and I are marrying on the beach, the candle idea won't work, BUT they do a unity sand thing...cheesy, yeah...BUT if we can get some sand from his hometown & then some from mine, that'd be a cool keepsake to have kinda.

And D just told me today he wants us to incorporate some of our own vows. Like he's gonna vow to always be there to kill my moths for me (looooooong story!) (L)

I´ve actually never been to a wedding with vows, only the catholic to death do us part thing.

I´ve heard poems though, and I even have one that I really want to be read at my wedding, although I won´t have anyone from Brasil there that could read it (it´s in portuguese, unless I manage to translate it and have the judge read).

I don't get what you are promising then. You are married, but for as long as you feel like it. No promises to be faithful all the days of your lives. I don't think that should just be understood. It has greater meaning when someone has to say it out loud in front of God and the world to hear. Just like saying "I love you" for the first time. It can be implied with hugs and kisses (or poems and readings) but....

Is there like some social movement that says it is old fashioned to have vows that I haven't heard of? Even secular marriages that I have gone to have vows written by the couple. Something!?! HMMmmmm...

We had no vows. We had an Islamic marriage and it is much like a contract.

However, we are well aware of what we have vowed to one another and what our marriage means to us in terms of our committment. Expressing that in front of the Imam would not have somehow made it more valid. The Imam is just some guy and my husband is my husband. What is important is that my husband knows what my intentions are and I know his. My committment would not be any stronger (or weaker) if I expressed it in front of other people.

What gives greater meaning to one person doesn't give greater meaning to all. It comes down to our cultural and religious customs and personal viewpoints. I never dreamed of the traditional American wedding and could never see myself going through some of the customs. However, most of my close friends dreamed of it from the time they were young.
