I went to my cousin's wedding this weekend and there were no vows! They had a poem about how important love it and they said the ring was never ending, but at no time did they pledge their devotion to each other or say forever or I promise. Nothing. I thought it was a bit weird. Anyone been to a wedding like this?

I felt really bad for them--their unity candle went out when they went to light it. :o

Saying the wovs at a wedding is a cultural thing.

It is not common here in Croatia, although in the recent years some couples have chosen to incorporate it in their wedding ceremonies... I guess, one of the influences of Hollywood....

I have never heard of a unity candle until now

Naturalized! Yeah!

... to show their union as one.

Oh, I thought that's what the wedding was for.

It is. The unity candle is just symbolic of the joining of families. It is not required by any law or religion. It's just another tradition that some choose to incorporate into their wedding ceremony.

What's a unity candle?

oi! :P:lol::lol::lol:

I think whatever floats someone's boat is cool. It's their wedding and it's really all about what makes them happy on that day.

Seen too many "wedding bloopers" programs to know that unity candles can be a flop... seen them blow out too many times, fall over, and I think once a bridesmaid's hair caught fire from one...but not sure, it could just have been decorative candles...not the unity one.

If they read poems, then perhaps that's exactly how they intended it. Lots of couples are doing non traditional things. All that really matters is that legal piece of paper. To my knowledge, there is nothing else that has to be said or done (aside from a witness).

We had a unity candle when we had our church ceremony as we thought it was a good symbolism of two families coming together (hubby & his son + me and my son). On it was printed: "A circle of love unites us" and the date of the cermony. We also had our names (hubby, me, our two sons) on it.

we had a non-convential wedding ... although we still wore traditional dress and we read 'vows' we had written to each other. we didn't include i promise to this and promise to that. we just spoke the words from our heart. the officiant did a brief 'thingie' when we exchanged our rings and said 'i do' and that was it!

weddings can REALLY be exactly as you want them nowadays!

ace,

No vows at my wedding. We did each make a short speech to the assemblage giving them our thoughts about each other.

How can one light something that's already lit? Wouldn't the candle have to be out when one goes to light it?

As far as I know the bride and groom each have their own candle which they use to light the unity candle (in unison). The flame must have gone out as they were doing so.

Agent Smith,

It is. That's why a unity candle works so well as part of a wedding celebration.
