Passport in Maiden Name

Hi All,

I was all excited about receiving my Approval for Parole document yesterday, as hopefully it means I can go back to England and visit for a couple of weeks until my work permit comes through. I entered the USA on a K1 visa four months ago and got married.

My AOS documents are in my married name, my British Passport is in my maiden name. I can call any airline I decide to book with, and work out what name I need to put my ticket in, but I am worried about coming through POE (probably Dulles in Washington DC) with my passport and Parole document in different names. Has anybody done this? My other options seem to be going to DC (not a problem) to get a passport from the embassy, although I don't know how long that'll take, or trying to get a new passport while in the UK - I was planning to be there two weeks. I am worried about them accepting my US marriage certificate there though. And to be honest - it sounds stressful.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Hello Lisalu,

Hmmmm, from the lack of response, it looks like we might not know about this one. The only thing I can offer is that it seems like life would be simpler if all the travel documents matched. So if it is possible to get the passport changed, I would do that. Do you have to actually go to DC? I sort of thought you could just send off for the new married name passport with the correct DC forms?

Hope this is even slightly helpful

All the best x

I replied in the thread linked above, but I will reply here as well as include what happened to me the last time I flew.

I have flown internationally 5 times since arriving here in the US. I travel with the following:

-- airline tickets in my maiden name, since my passport is in my maiden name

-- my GC (or AP, or expired GC +extension letter, etc) in my married name

-- a certified copy of my marriage certificate

I have yet to have a problem with airline staff, security staff, or border staff with this arrangement.

The last time I flew, when I checked in I had to use the automated kiosks. Once my GC was scanned, a "please get airline staff for assistance" message popped up on the screen. They checked my GC and extension letter (because the problem was with the expiration of the GC) but didn't bat an eye at the fact that my tickets were in a different name.

The people you have to worry about are not the airline staff, but the staff at the security checkpoint in the airport, they check to make sure your tickets and passport use the same name.
