I was wondering the same thing. I think it might be similar to how they handled themselves up to the time that we invaded Iraq - there's this fear that if they inject too much of their own commentary or editorialize the news too much, Americans might think the media helped persuade the populace one way or another.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson - who would have been a terrific choice for many reasons - was not picked because she is pro-choice. It's that simple. She also claims she didn't want it.
