none of this sh!t really matters (fmla, unwed mothers, et al) ... when will one of these two candidates step up and talk about how they are going to fix this country before it collapses under the weight of its own debt....

The only way we 'collapse under the weight' of our debt is if we can no longer afford to service said debt.

At this moment, we aren't anywhere close to that.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

FMLA only forces your employer to give (unpaid) time off for covered absences, without fear of termination.

If you work for a good employer, these absences would be covered (paid) under a "sick leave" policy, leading to short term disability, then long term disability.

my hubby got screwed over by FMLA..

the HR at his work told him he could apply for it and they intially said no you can't take it because you are not the one in the hospital...

but then the HR lady told him she would take care of it but she didn't...

but hubby had already taken about 3 weeks off from work.. but he only got paid for 6 of them using his sick days.. (even though he had 12 sick days)

but if the country as we know it dies... does it really? My point is that the energy needs be focused on salvaging this country first.....

YMMV

I think this does matter, and a lot. Other countries provide a much better standard of living, not on the basis of wages, but quality of family life. In the UK mothers get 1 yr maternity leave, in Sweden they get 18 months, yes 1.5 yrs. And in the US 0 weeks. Now take away the FMLA and people wont even be able to keep their jobs, to go and take care of a sick family member.

This country is sophisticated, it can take care of more than one problem at a time. Besides, no one thinks this country needs to be salvaged, they keep thinking there is no recession. You can't help someone in denial.

In Ukraine they get up to 3 years.... So what is your point?

Either candidates position on this topic won't be the one thing that sways my vote...

YMMV

There are third world countries that have maternity leave and provide opportunities to care for sick family members. But for the John McCains of this country, we cannot afford what a third world nation and economy affords it's members. These guys are so fcuking out of touch it's sickening.

It demonstrates the two very stark contrasts between what both political parties are aspiring to and it's an age old argument. The difference this time around is that the Republicans have had 8 years to demonstrate to the American people, their policies and they have failed miserably. From the underfunding and gutting of the FDA, to war in Iraq that is going to cost each and every American, enough Americans are tired of the Republican Party's song of dance.

You forget their biggest blunder and failure - a growing economy coupled - for the first time in recorded history - with a declining real income for most American families.
