Tropical quartet: 4 storms with more to come

Hmm. It's just wait and see for us around here. We already know Hanna isn't supposed to come to my part of Florida unless it suddenly shifts. Not sure about the others.

I'm still at home waiting for word to go back to work at my production facility out on the Gulf of Mexico offshore of Louisiana. And that is just because of Hurricane Gustav (which has already passed). The other storms are still too far away to trigger offshore evacuations.

Last I heard they aren't letting anyone into the area I normally fly out of in coastal Louisiana to go to work unless they are a resident. My supervisor that lives in Louisiana said they are still without power at the airport. Besides that, I-10 going east is a parking lot of evacuees trying to return to Louisiana from Houston. What a mess.

I might get to go to work Thursday or Friday, but in the mean time I get a few extra days at home.

any word on rig damage yet? i've been watching gas prices for the past 2 weeks.

Now THAT is a question to consider.

The first reports are that there is no major damage. I am also happy to see that the price of oil is still dropping.

Maybe it will take 7/8 years for that price drop to hit Chicago since its still at $4.29 up here.

LOL. That's just not right! Why is it still so high there?

Florida needs the rain.

Actually, Florida doesn't need the rain anymore after Fay. Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas still do, though.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I just talked to my supervisor at 3:15PM. They are still trying to line up helicopter transportation to even go out and look. Not to mention that the airport we fly out of is still without power. His cell phone works though. He told me to stay at home again, so I have Thursday off as well. I was supposed to be at work at 6AM this morning, but was told last night to stay home.

My guess is that some facilities probably have been damaged to some extent that were in the main path of the storm. They also have to survey pipelines before resuming production. In 2005 Rita hit to the west and Katrina to the east. Both not only damaged pipelines, but also damaged production platforms. Believe it or not, they are still cleaning up toppled production facilities from those storms.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

 no, it's more than that. Tropical Storms tend to ** up the Raritan River valley region, which is where I'm currently situated

Just hope you stay dry. Living in Miami was kind of a wet towel sometimes.

Not sure about the gas prices. I guess some folks could theorize politics may have something to do with it but I doubt it. Historically the midwest gets higher distribution costs from coastal refineries.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Hurricane Ike will strike the Texas coast Friday evening /Saturday morning local time.

The exact location of landfall is not a certainty, somewhere between Galveston and Corpus Christi ... anyway it'll be a cat. 4 or 5 ... No doubt we're gonna hget hammered...

As an emergency worker I'll stay in the Victoria area, although we'll go under a temporary lockdown apx Friday noon local time...

Kathleen will go to her son and d-i-l

Good Luck and stay safe. FL got lucky once again with Gustav and Hanna passing us to the west and east, respectively and Ike heading over your way. Josephine just kind of disappeared on us altogether. Other than a good soaking from Fay in parts of the state, the 2008 season - as the previous two - wasn't all that bad thus far.

And yes, I am knocking on wood like crazy...
