I hope you are joking. Strange to hear this coming up again and again in media. As if Cheney or someone else REALLY want it to prove their point that Russia is big bad and aggressive.

Don't think so, no need.

For this to happen Ukraine will have to split into 2 or 3 first, then brew for 5-7 years, and have a civil war.

But it is a possibility. Only question is how crazy Yushenko really is.

It comes up in the media because it's something people on all sides are concerned about. Ira and I are friends with a Russian/Ukrainian couple that live nearby, and both swore - rightly or wrongly - that the Georgian intervention was the beginning of something larger. Neither one speaks English well enough to be affected by CNN or MSNBC headlines, so it's unlikely they're forming their judgments based on American news/propaganda.

I am sure the Russian/Ukranian diaspora is full of these rumors.

Maybe it's the fear. Considering the history, Russians and Ukranians are afraid of it, it's the ultimate nightmare.

This is one of the reasons I just can't imagine this, as i am sure most Ukranians or Russians (I hope).

Take also correction on paranoia, it's also common after hard times economically and politically.

If, just theoretically, something bad happens, Ukrania will split, just cease to exist as it is known now. Westen will join Poland or whoever, Eastern and Crimea/Odessa will join Russia. After all it's a historical divide anyway, I don't recall Ukrania being a country before 1990s, separate from Russia.

And will all this political mess there, for the last few years, nobody in their right mind will touch it.

Not until the dust settles one way or another.

Another thing, before 90s I do not think there was a difference between Ukranian and Russian.. Just a region where one lives, for the most part. Of course there were cases or nationalism, in some western parts Nazis being saviors etc. but it was only along the western borders in former Polish parts. But that's history, now I'm sure things are different. In any case, Yushenko is gone, do not think anyone or anything can save him, for the last year he barely hung on to power at mercy of Yiulya.
