Missed Interview Date

A couple of weeks ago, my fiance in Canada got her notice from the Montreal Consulate saying "we have set up an interview date, etc" which was exciting!

However the interview date was for August 5th. It was then August 26th. (Date of the letter was July 23 or something). That letter plus a couple of others had some scribbling about being rerouted on them. Great. Of all things to get lost in the mail. *grrrr*

So my fiance emails the Montreal-IV-DV@state.gov address (since on the form it says not to call)

To Whom it may concern:

I received, today in the mail, a letter from this embassy in regards to my VISA appointment. The letter is dated 13 June, 2008 and advises me that my appointment date is 05 August, 2008.

This letter, along with several others of mine, were apparently mishandled and delivered to a wrong address. I just received them today (25 August, 2009) as the postal system sorted the mail out.

Due to this error, I would like to reschedule this appointment at your earliest convenience. If possible, I would also like to know if there is some way to be notified over the phone or through email so that this does not happen again.

With the case number and name of course. (I do note that she made an error on the date, but I think they figured out it was 2008, not 2009)

She got the autoreply, of course. She got another reply back the next day:

Ok, thanks

And nothing since. That doesn't fill me with confidence...

I know the letter they sent says not to call, but I am a leetle worried personally. Should we call anyways to make sure? This is a weird situation.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

This happened to me last year and I called and they set me up with another interview right away on the phone. Though soon after that they stopped taking phone calls so I don't know.

Donne moi une poptart!

Now that's a big bummer :( I hope for you two that they reschedule you really quickly.

One thing is sure, it's getting me wondering about me and some others who are waiting for their interview date. I wonder if there's a minimum amount of time to wait before starting to email the Consulate about your interview date. Does anybody know?

I would call; I would fax them a copy of the envelope with the notice on it and your request for a new interview, and I would email again until you get some sort of acknowledgment and/or a new interview date. Good luck.

There is no minimum amount of time to wait, I would call about a week after you have submitted all your paperwork and every week after that.

Syphyre, sorry this has happened, I would certainly try to call, you may not get through, but it can't hurt to try.

Ouch. Dang postal system!

Definitely do what Kathryn41 suggested and explain to them your case and what happened. You had no control over this situation which makes it even more frustrating. Hope you can get a new interview date soon enough.

Our teeny timeline:

Jan 23 '08 ~ met online

Mar '08 ~ 1st visit to Vancouver

May '08 ~ 2nd visit to Vancouver

Jun 08 ~ plans to move to the west coast!

Aug 8 08 ~ he moves to Bellingham

current ~ many trips back and forth across the border...

Thank you all for your responses so quickly! This is the first time I've posted here (though my fiance and I have used this website extensively, a big hearty thank you to everyone!)

We're going to go ahead and call them and/or fax them tomorrow I think that the passive approach is not that way to go here. I don't want to bug and annoy them but I don't think calls or emails weekly until we get some sensible response would probably be alright?

I had zero qualms emailing the consulate in Montreal.

I even befriended operator number 5 and then it was 6, I forget which order exactly.

I would hit the reply button and respectfully ask for help.

It totally worked and did not piss them off.

Let us know what happens.

Email them, ignore the auto response and then look for the next email to come.

Be sure to put the number in the subject line as well as the name and the reason for emailing them, then keep hitting the reply button.

Good luck!!!

Go for it. We are in the queue with you and the communications that we've had with Montreal have been horrible. One line responses, basically telling us to go away and inquire again in 6 months. Its such a black hole. I feel for you guys and hope that you can get an interview date ASAP. Its possible that there are a number of us in the same boat with you. When did you send in your packet 3, if you don't mind me asking.

congrats!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Lots of things happening October 14 - your interview, Canadian election - and aliens are supposed to hover big spaceships overtop of major cities and land somewhere in Alabama! Oh, and it's my Dad's birthday!
