Hmmmm I'm not sure about comparisons to Clarence Thomas - Harriet Meiers might be a bit more apt here....

I guess I'd want to know that Palin is indeed going to exercise real authority - or whether she was picked to pay lip service to a perception (i.e. that she represents something tangibly new and different). It would be a pity if she turned out to be just be a doormat for McCain and other old-school cigar chomping career politicians.

I dunno - a lots been said about the evil's of Washington, but someone who hasn't swum in those circles is surely going to have a bit of challenge when it comes to being effective in national government without those sort of alliances.

I just get the impression that regardless of her talents - she'll end up being marginalised in a McCain White house.

Kind of what happened to Hillary and Gore. Bill Clinton almost singlehandedly destroyed both of their respective presidential campaigns. That may be a record. They could never outgrow Bill's shadow.

I was wondering how it could be that if Palin wasn't much of threat politically why are 6 entire current threads on OT devoted entirely to her? Obama's upbeat campaign of hope and changed to mope and rage after Palin's hat being thrown into the ring.

There are legit targets of Palin's youth and inexperience but Obama hasn't overcome those negatives yet either. Worse, his running mate, Biden, said in the debates that Obama is unqualified. Tough to overcome when your name is on the top of the ticket.

McCain was screwed at the outset of not having the novelty factor of Obama nor an energized Republican base. With Palin he got both so it was a smart decision. If he played it smart and went some plain GOP guy, he was doomed.

All the Dems giving advice are easy to see through. Any McCain VP would have been the wrong choice but you know the Dems are frightened out of their wits when the targets become motherhood, a pregnant daughter, her kid with Down's syndrome, her secessionist link akin to Jefferson Davis (damn Southeners- I mean Northerners way north), photos of a "hidden pregnancy" to cover for her daughter. . .the Democrats have a new motto Women and Children First . . . Targets.

For the Dems, conservative Palin gives them somebody they can really hate since the jab McCain is through allusions to Bush. This will fire up Hillary's lukewarm support for Barack the Usurper. Hillary must destroy Palin, through surrogates of course, and stop Palin from being the first female VP. Hillary has been shamed twice already and a third time for a shot at history will not be denied.

The objective is to get Palin to break down and cry on national TV and the Dems like crow "She's too emotional to be VP (McCain's a hothead, too)" Make sure she's painted as a white trash baby maker from the trailer park in Wasilla for good measure so she's considered a joke forever and never considered for the White House again.

You're a neophyte on American politics so you don't have much to compare this campaign to. It's not business as usual, it's personal now.

I googled the word "creationism" 48 hours after Palin's name came into the picture and it was there was already a special link to "Palin creationism". Beside the sheer number of threads devoted to Palin's there's a "Theme of the Day" attack that is classic campaign tactic so that part is part of the business. Most of the anti-Palin are all saying the same things because not much on her so they quote the same sources.

It's usually hands off the candidate's family but the running mate's spouse is a public figure and can attract mud but coming after the kids first is pretty low and one doesn't do it unless they fear the candidate. There will be no seperation of Palin's family life from her policies. Everything she did as a bad mother will be extended to her as a bad VP, too. If she wins and McCain drops dead, the Dems are going to have a nightmare on their hands and so will Hillary. Thwarting Obama will send the Dems into a rage that will pale beside the all consuming hate for Bush. The Dems and their allies only have two months to kill and bury Palin's political career and that's no understatement.

If the media focus on Palin's conventional issues then you're right but it if balloons into scouring Alaska looking for old boyfriends, her kids' grades in school, her husband the mindless working stiff. . .there's still the avenues of attack and ALL of them will come up and get national attention. Obama doesn't have to say a word. It's just too easy.

I've seen enough elections (here and abroad) to know full well that this is pretty much always what happens, and that Palin isn't getting it much worse than anyone else has. In a week she'll be old news - short of some big John Edwardsesque s*x scandal kicking off.
