China is planning to build the world's fastest bullet train, to link Beijing with the financial capital Shanghai.

...

The Ministry of Railways says it is raising the speed it intends the new line connecting the cities to reach when it opens in 2012.

New technology will enable trains to travel at 380 km or 236 miles an hour, 30 km per hour (18mph) more than the current generation of bullet trains, according to the ministry's deputy chief engineer, Zhang Shuguang.

...

The new line will be the longest high-speed railway to be built in one go in the world.

...

The extra would be sufficient to cut the journey time from five hours as currently planned to four hours, compared with current 10-12 hours. The difference would make the rail route competitive with the current two-hour flight time once check-in times were taken into account.

Should I bother asking what we are doing in the US..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Nothing quite that cool, but here are 2 projects that show Americans still do know how to plan for the future by adding capacity for future growth -

  1. A new Trans-Hudson Express Tunnel (The Tunnel Project) will maximize the travel benefits and flexibility for commuters into and out of midtown Manhattan. Rail capacity will double into New York City during peak hours with more frequent off peak/weekend access.
  2. Liberty Corridor - A collection of transportation projects in the Liberty Corridor section of New Jersey.

I just don't get why nearly every other country / city is moving ahead, abroad, while we are stagnant here. Stuck in a rut since the early 70's.

Something I have been extremely critical of before. The infrastructure here is not only dated but extremely run down. Our large cities are some of the most run down I have been to in the developed world.

It kills me because this is a no brainer. Not only will large projects rejuvenate cities and towns but it would also create hundreds of thousands of needed jobs.

See post # 4 for two very large projects.

These projects are large for the US but quite pale when compared to projects going on overseas.

What projects are there to rejuvenate the overall country. Rejuvenate / modernize the 3rd world looking cities. The United states has been embroiled in bull ####### since the 70's so everyone else has over taken them.

I hate to boast but Australia, for example, is a country of 21 million yet not even one US city comes close to Melbourne or Sydney. Why.. Different priorities. Not because the United states cannot do the same. The United States is preoccupied with other bull ####### rather than improving the country. That is, rather than improving the overall living standard for Americans.

PS The politicians can talk about change till the cows come home but the reality is that the US is falling, in terms of living standards, on a daily basis.
