I would totally cross off Nebraska, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin. For a variety of reasons.

Pray, do tell :D I've not been to any of them so can't pass judgment other than what I have seen online :D

Gillian - I think NC was one of my natural disaster states

Maven - CT is one of the options I think but I wasn't sure how cold/snowy it got in winter...

CT doesn't get as snowy as the more northerly New England states, and there seems to be a lot fewer big blizzards than there were when I was a kid. Last year we probably got a couple of feet in total, but that's spread over 3 months. The biggest snowfalls are in the northern part of the state -- where I'm from, on the shoreline, we usually don't get more than 4" at a time, and usually it's more like 1-2".

The CT shoreline is similarly beautiful -- check out places like Clinton, Westbrook and Old Lyme. The further east you go on the shoreline the less expensive it gets. And in general, the eastern part of the state is cheaper overall. Spring and fall are so beautiful in CT, summers get hot (but hardly ever above 90-95) and winters will require snow boots, mittens and hats. And we hardly ever have natural disasters -- last big one I can recall is Hurriane Gloria in 1987.

Yay! Thanks for the review Maven - I am collating all information so I can shortlist a few places - there are so many options it is an arduous task which is why I am starting now! Plus it gives me something to do :D

I noticed that - I was out here a couple of years ago and *gasp* we had rain in the desert... I never realised that you had to drive everywhere at 5mph as soon as the ground was wet

Been researching more of the States now to find somewhere that has decent four seasons - mild springs, hot summers, fall colours and snowy winters :D So far I have these:

Colorado

Connecticut

Indiana

Massachusetts

Minnesota

Nebraska

New Hampshire

New Mexico

New York

Ohio

Oregon

Pennsylvania

Rhode Island

Utah

Vermont

West Virginia

Wisconsin

Wyoming

I'm trying to narrow it down a bit as well - got rid of the states that had the worst of the natural disasters etc but it's really hard because different areas of each state have different weather!! There are so many options that I really have my work cut out for me! Any thoughts?!

I would totally cross off Nebraska, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin. For a variety of reasons.

Hey! I heard you say Nebraska :crying:

It's blazing hot in summer and freezing in winter...so basically it's pretty extreme and there isn't much of a fall or spring. Anyways, I do miss it and how beautiful Indian Caves looks with all the leaves turning or the amazing thunderstorms and tornados we get in the spring.

Nicky does like NE...I think he would prefer to stay in Chicago but I don't think he'd be opposed to moving back there. I personally would move to Omaha as it is a large-ish city (about 800,000) but you don't have to go far if you want to get away from it all.

Yay! Thanks for the review Maven - I am collating all information so I can shortlist a few places - there are so many options it is an arduous task which is why I am starting now! Plus it gives me something to do :D

You are welcome to ask me anything about VT as I pretty much know the whole state by now. We got over 150 inches of snow last winter in central VT so if you can stand a six month winter, it could be the place for you. ;) Really stunning fall colors this year. I'd like to say that evens it out, but it doesn't quite cut it!

Wow - that is a lot of snow!!! Is that just in central VT? Or do you get less snow in other areas? Three months of snow/winter sounds good but six months would be a bit of a climate change from the desert!! I don't even know how I will cope going back to the UK!!!

The average winter snowfall is around 100 inches I think but don't quote me. Last season we had snow on the ground from mid November to late April. And I don't mean a sprinkle...we were quite a few feet under by the time Christmas rolled around. The season before was pretty rough with a record snowfall of 31 inches in 24 hours. Often snow doesn't really settle until December but frosts start from the odd one in August until April! Southern VT is milder but still pretty damn cold and still loads of snow. We get a few odd crazy winters where the low temperature would be a solid -20c low for a few weeks and barely getting to -10c high. Coldest it hits is around -30c which is crazy nose icicle time. I don't mind the amount of snow, and if you dress right the cold is OK, but the ice is a nightmare. If you want 4 seasons you do get them in VT but winter in the dominant one. Spring is muddy and often wet. Summer can be beautiful but can also be wet like this year, and fall is never long enough. It just gets too cold too early for my liking!

Here is our car after the record snow. The car arial is on the left sticking out of the drift!post-6707-1224213128_thumb.jpg

It just gets too cold too early for my liking!

wow thats some amount of snow in the picture. I'm really excited to move to Montrose in Colorado. The san Juan mountains are nearby and vale, aspen, eagle etc are all only 2 or 3 hours drive away. Can't wait for my first full winter and fingers crossed lots of snow :)

Wow - that is amazing!!! Doesn't that completely trash your car?!?! I think that much snow is a little beyond building snowmen

Stuart/Courtney - what is the weather/climate like where you are moving to in CO? It is one of the States that Jeremy always wanted to move to but I have never been there :D This is really fun finding out first hand about all the different States - there is only so much information you can get from generalised stats online :D
