my first day of work went good besides the fact that it took me about 50 minutes to get there because of all the traffic.... it only took me about 25 minutes to get home...

I think this family will be really nice to work for...

they said I could make a list of some things I like to eat and they will keep them stocked for me and they also said they would leave some cash if I wanted to take the kids out somewhere...

I didn't get the full experience today because the grandma came over, I think to check me out... anyways she basically took care of the older one and took him out for most of the day... the baby is a great baby but he likes to be carried around and my arm is killing me now...

oh and they are going to pay me $9/hour and they are going to pay me weekly...

Awesome news. And thank goodness they not paying $3-$4 (???) an hour like the one you were talking about the other day.

You can always use the baby carrying as an inadvertant work out

I just realized today I only have 8 hours of sick leave at this point. I've used it all going to the fertility clinic. I only gain 8 hours a month so I'll use it as fast as I get it. At this point I won't have any sick leave once I finally do get pregnant. My only saving grace is my vacation time. I start gaining 11 hours a month in 2 months. That'll rack up pretty quickly as long as I don't have to start using it to go to the fertility clinic. I'm also hoping this next month will be our month so I won't be going to the fertility clinic anymore.

Alright so Booty talking sick leave and holiday leave have left me wondering about the US leave entitlement system. In Australia we got 4 weeks a year holiday entitlements plus 2 or 3 public holidays. Here in the Uk they get 25 days (5 weeks) plus 8 public holidays.

John says you are lucky to get one week a year to begin with and then it builds up after that. Is this the same across the country? He also says you are lucky to be paid sick leave and public holidays. A lot of companies give you the time off but don't pay you.

What do the rest of you employed in the US encounter?

Yay Marilyn for a first good day with the kids. I am glad that you still feel positive about it!

As for vacation time in Germany, I get 30 days paid vacation (six weeks in total), plus 12 public holidays. We don't count sick days - if you are sick, you are sick and you still get paid (up to six weeks, after that your health insurance pays you 70% of your salary). And if you have to go to a doctor or an official office, you don't have to take personal time, you just go.

Maybe Germany is not such a horrible place after all.

good morning everybody :D :D

about the vacations, depends a lot on the company.. most of them will pay you for national holidays.. but it's true, some companies will give you 1 week when you start, and next year they throw in another week, although some of them won't let you use them how you please, like taking 2 weeks in a row.. specially retail.. when I worked in an electronics store, after a year I had like 4 weeks vacation (because you could accumulate them, but they changd that)... but I had to take a week, work 1 day, and then I could get another week va, unless you requested with further anticipation, they might let you take more than a week holidays...

but yea, basically vacations in the USA suck @ss big big time... same with healthcare, fortunately I got a good insurance, but it's expensive.. and as sick days, in my company we have a week of 'personal days' that can be used either as extra vacations, or as sick days... but if you run out of those, good luck.. u don't come to work, it's unpaid day -i work hourly-, with salaried people i don't think it works like that though..
