For all Sept filers who are now approved and putting together I-134 Affidavit of Support....

I'm interested in knowing what folks are doing for tax returns?

My intent had been to follow the VJ guide, which as far as I can tell says to include the most recent years' tax return. No problem, I have a photocopy of all pages of my 2007 return with 1040+all schedules.

However tonight I saw a discussion about people applying to the IRS to get transcripts of their tax returns. Is that necessary? Are people on this board going to those lengths?

Hi. I can try to answer your question. Tax transcripts are traditionally for people who have lost their tax records. However, in this case, I believe people are using them because they are more official coming directly from the IRS and I believe they are smaller in length. They are also free to request so it wouldn't hurt to get them in my opinion. I have requested some but haven't received them in the mail yet. Once I get them and see what they look like I'll determine which to submit.

Hey all! So how is everyone doing? I just mailed off a binder of information to my SO. I am hoping NVC forwards our petition soon so that he could schedule an interview ASAP. I have a quick question, though: how often does NVC update their case status? Every time I call the automated system, the guy tells me that they haven't received my case. This is driving me crazy!!! I know it's only been a week, but do we know how often the automated system is updated?

I called NVC for a week and everytime received the same message you are referring to. Finally, last Friday I called and got a live voice on the phone. I asked about my case and the lady at NVC told me they had received my case and forwarded it on to the embassy in Moscow two days prior. I found that it is best to talk to someone rather than rely on their automated system.

I don't want to be rude but if you guys listened to the automated message closely and choose the option for K visas you would have been instantly connected with an operator. They don't put the K visas in their automated tracking system so you must speak to a live person no matter what...

I agree!! I remember at the company I used to work for in Israel we had an American guy record the company voice response system, because he had a neutral baritone voice. After he left the company, they gave that duty to a South African. No offense to any South Africans on this list but I used to crack up whenever I dialed the company directory. I find the guy who does the voiceovers at NVC to be similarly amusing, even though he is American. That guy should do casting calls in Hollywood, he has real potential beyond his current job.

Thanks Karri. That's not rude at all (imho). Good to know that I should stop wasting my time on the auto system. I hadn't realized that. We all have to look out for each other, right?

Yeah, that's pretty much the direction I took as well. I've printed out and will mail in form 4506T requesting 3 years of transcripts. I tried their phone number (for those interested, see http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=110571,00.html) but only got "technical difficulties... please try later". Sigh.

From the instructions I think the biggest reason people request tax transcripts is to satisfy their mortgage lenders regarding income levels.

Which is useful for me, since at the same time that I'm processing my fiancee's immigration I'm also closing on a house. Just last week I put together all the docs for loan underwriting on my house, it's almost identical to the docs I need for I-134 filing (letter from employer, paystubs, W-2, tax returns, bank statements, etc.) So that's been a timesaver, getting a twofer.

For now I've given photocopies of my tax returns both for loan underwriting and to my fiancee with I-134. And I'll get the IRS transcripts just as insurance. If either underwriting or Bangkok embassy want more proof I'll be ready for them.

Today I locked the rate on my loan at 5.5% (30 yr,fixed, conforming, Dupage county IL, 800+ FICO, 10% down). Anybody have any opinions if that's a good deal or not? Two weeks ago I could have had 5.1% but rates have been trending higher so I figured I better get off the fence and lock. Hope I won't regret that. I close in mid-Feb And hopefully get to carry my new bride over the threshold of our home-sweet-home in early April!!!

Here's what I did. I checked the "intend" box, and wrote:

I intend to marry ***MY SWEET HONEY*** (insert legal name here) and to share my household with her. She will dwell in my home and share with me in the proceeds of my employment earnings for food, clothing, shelter, utilities, and other needs on an ongoing and permanent basis.

Also, should check out the discussion at http://www.visajourney.com/forums/lofivers...hp/t168875.html about the old vs. new I-134 forms.

I hadn't realized the forms changed till tonight, after I'd already sent mine to Thailand.

I had filled out the new one (dated 05/31/10) that apparently does NOT require notary. However, I had it notarized anyway. Figured - can't hurt. The notary was kind of puzzled when I asked him to do it, but he certified it. Cost me all of $2 at UPS store.

Now I'm wondering if I should complete and mail her the OLD one too, dated 04-30-07, and also get it notarized, since that's the one that Bangkok embassy has linked off of their webpage:

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/i-134.pdf

But... perhaps enough's enough. After all the NEW one ought to supersede the OLD one, right?

My friend is closing on a house now, he just got a deal (through Pulty Homes - the builder, & maybe their own lending arm - not sure) for 3.99% for 30 year fixed, no points, 10% down. Unbelievable rate!

Apparently IRS provides transcripts for free, but it takes them about 10 days. I suppose what I might do is send my own photocopy to my fiancee now, ask IRS for a transcript, and when it arrives mail that to her as well. It should come in plenty of time before her interview, which is still not even scheduled yet (I'm still waiting to hear that our file is at NVC, so no real hurry here).

I sent packet 3 in last week to the Bangkok embassy and I basically just sent a copy of the tax return I filed with the IRS. Got an interview, so that must have been ok.

Also just an FYI on the interview schedule you will need to complete the checklist for the Bangkok embassy and send in all documentation (except evidence of relationship), prior to getting an interview date. Also if you didn't know, the Bangkok embassy requires a you get a verification of unmarried status if she has never registered a marriage before, she can only get this in her home town. We were delayed a week, cause we had to make the trip there to get it.

They received packet 3 (checklist and doucments) on the 21st of Jan, and our interview date is Jan 29th :) After NOA2 everything has moved lightning fast compared to the first 4 months.
