I read an article that vinyl records are making a comeback

That would be great! That's when album covers made a difference and from what audiophiles have told me, CD sampling isn't as rich sounding as a vinyl record. MP3's are even less than CD's. The sound of our music has actually degraded but nobody seems to mind it. There was suppose to be a newer CD format at a higher sampling rate, but I think the popularity of MP3's has literally put CD's on the backburner.

I'm quit a bit older than most here on VJ and, as such, have a boatload of old vinyl record albums. Probably hundreds. They are great for listening at home and the sound is richer than buying the rereleases on CD. Most of my old vinyl albums are in pristine condition because I used to record them to cassette tape and just listened to the music on the recorded tape. BTW I mostly listen to music on my long commutes to and from work. It's kind of hard to listen to a vinyl record in your car.

Unfortunately cassette tapes died out when CD's came out. So instead of buying the same music on CD that I already had on vinyl, I just recorded my favorite songs from vinyl to MP3 format. Windows has a recording utility already installed to adjust the sound level of the recording and I used that with Adaptec CD Spin Doctor / Sound Editing software. I also used the old MusicMatch software and prefer it over the Adaptec software. It's really not difficult to convert analog vinyl songs to digital MP3.

I just went to Radio Shack and bought the RCA to stereo mini cord to tie the output of my stereo receiver to my soundcard on my computer. I just play the records on my turntable as usual and hit the record icon on my computer screen with my mouse. I press "stop" when the song is over. I just have to record the song in real time. I have lots of songs on vinyl that never have been rereleased to CD. It took a while, but I have converted hundreds of my old vinyl songs to MP3 and then burn them to CD.

BTW...Radio Shack also has an all-in-one packaged turntable / amp / software package for sale to convert vinyl to digital files. I never used it, but a guy I work with bought one to convert his old vinyl to MP3. Pretty much everything you need is included along with the instructions. This would be useful to folks that have old vinyl records languishing in their closet, but no turntable and receiver.

Very cool. I can imagine that your MP3's have a different sound than ones made straight from digital. I don't have any vinyl records, and I'm not sure about actually diving it that kind of investment, but I'm sure there's a market for MP3's made from vinyl recordings.

Do you happen to know that sampling rate you have your MP3's set to?

Did any of you guys ever hear the remake of "take a look at my girlfriend," its a quasi-rap version and it disgusts me and they always play it on the radio when i'm pissed off, so it makes me even more pissed off. I don't see how people get the rights to do dumb-### remakes like that.

When you record vinyl to MP3 all the snap-crackle-pops from the vinyl end up on your MP3. I grew up with vinyl records, so for me it is just normal. It is just part of the charm of vinyl records. There is editing software to doctor the MP3 recording to drop out the snap-crackle-pop sounds, but as far as I'm concerned it walks on and muffles the richness of the original music. I just record straight to MP3 from the vinyl and leave the imperfections inherent in vinyl records on the MP3.

It's hard to explain, but I have listened to my old Doors vinyl albums and compared the sound to the same albums that have been digitally remastered and rereleased to commercial CD. The vinyl sounds richer and fuller to me, but has the inherent snap-crackle-pop. The digital remasters don't have the imperfections, but are not as crisp. After all, these old albums were originally released in analog vinyl and that is the way they were meant to be listen to. Newer, modern stuff that was recorded originally in digital is rich and crisp because it was created originally in digital.

Anyway, the lowest bit rate I ever record MP3 to is 128 kbps (which is considered CD quality). I have bought MP3 downloads from Amazon and Rhapsody that are 256 kbps files. Now I prefer 160 or 192 kbps, but I personally can't tell the difference between 128 kbps and 256 kbps files when I try to compare them. Of course 256 kbps files take up more room on your hard drive than 128 kbps files. Personally I think 160 kbps is more than adequate. Maybe someone else has a more informed opinion on that subject.

What is really cool about converting to MP3 is that some of the newer car stereos read MP3 files recorded on a 700 MB CD. So one CD holds hundreds of songs. I put a stereo in my wife's Honda Civic that has a USB thumb drive port on the front of it. I bought a 16 GB USB thumb drive and organized my entire collection in folders on the drive. There is so much music on the USB thumb drive that it would take months to listen to it all while driving and it easily fits in the palm of my hand. Literally thousands of songs. I still haven't filled the whole 16 GB up and have plenty of room left on it.

Compare that to a hundred pounds or more of vinyl records. That is technology at work.

Best version..... ever!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,

A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.

And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,

Joyfully, playfully watching me.

But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,

Logical, responsible, practical.

And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,

Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the worlds asleep,

The questions run too deep

For such a simple man.

Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned

I know it sounds absurd

But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,

Liberal, fanatical, criminal.

Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're

Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the worlds asleep,

The questions run so deep

For such a simple man.

Wont you please, please tell me what we've learned

I know it sounds absurd

But please tell me who I am.

Breakfast in America is a timeless album. I put them on my iPod. Now, my kids listen to them too.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I likes me some Supertramp.....

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
