It just bugs me. We have a first time black candidate for President. So who does McCain pick? A woman, a first, for running mate. Is this politics or a "lets see who out do's who in the firsts". Maybe I am odd, but I would prefer to pick someone who's policies match my needs. I am hopelessly old fashioned like that.

I feel very much OK with it all. Who cares who is first as long as there is a first!!!!!!! First black candidate, first woman potential VP. This country is progressing...who cares which party is first?

And I agree with the voting for the person whose policies match your own, regardless of gender/colour etc

I am not apposed to "firsts". I am apposed to a competition on firsts.

It's an election - it's about getting votes. McCain needed a younger, conservative running mate. Being that she is a minority is simply a strategic plus.

She is also a strong social conservative who will not alienate the party's base with the same "maverick" reputation for bucking the party line that could attract independents.

And with regard to her educational credentials (as opposed to whether or not she was beauty queen) - pretty similar to Biden's (University of Idaho vs University of Delaware)

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to understand her appeal even if you don't agree with the other party's politics.

Would he have picked her if his opponent not been a black man? If the answer to that question is yes, then I bow to his choice. Otherwise it really has nothing to do with issues. That strategy alone would cause me to rethink my vote.

For the Republicans to pick a woman or minority would have been even smarter if the Dems had fielded 2 old white guys

This is basically my stance. Are we going to vote for Obama because he is black? Are we going to vote for McCain because he has a woman running mate? I really wanted to see some of the issues addressed that I find important, not have an election based on ####### like this. I DON'T care what color or gender. I DO care about the issues.

Well, you could say the same about Obama's pick of Biden who in many ways was counter-intuitive to how he (Obama) ran in the primaries. The VP selection is mostly about extending your appeal with voters you may have trouble with and balancing out the ticket. I say Palin does that very well, just as Biden does for Obama.

This is basically my stance. Are we going to vote for Obama because he is black? Are we going to vote for McCain because he has a woman running mate? I really wanted to see some of the issues addressed that I find important, not have an election based on ####### like this. I DON'T care what color or gender. I DO care about the issues.

The media and the good ol US of A make you see color as a big issue with Barack. Of course no one can deny with the reputation that America has that having a minority woman or Black, is a big thing. However, most Blacks are over the whole race thing as its shoved in our face how Black we are everyday. To us its not that big of a deal to see races different than our own. You as an individual voter have to just vote for what you would like to see this country become for your children, cause change isnt coming overnight. We are not voting for our generation but the next generation.
