I'm gonna steal these from Fark, they're just too good not to pass along:

Lets see Obama:

Obama entered Harvard Law School in late 1988 and at the end of his first year was selected as an editor of the Harvard Law Review based on his grades and a writing competition.[17] In his second year he was elected president of the Law Review, a full-time volunteer position functioning as editor-in-chief and supervising the law review's staff of 80 editors.[18] Obama's election in February 1990 as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review was widely reported and followed by several long, detailed profiles.[18] He graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) magna cum laude from Harvard in 1991 and returned to Chicago where he had worked as a summer associate at the law firms of Sidley & Austin in 1989 and Hopkins & Sutter in 1990.[17][19]

Palin:

In 1984, after winning the Miss Wasilla contest earlier that year, Palin finished second in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant which won her a scholarship to help pay her way through college.[5] In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and also won Miss Congeniality.

Yeah, that's exactly the same being the top of your class at Harvard Law school and being the winner in beauty pageants is the same experience for president.

And:

Oh, I needed that. The day after the vice-presidential debate, there are going to be chunks of Palin in Joe Biden's stool.

Well you know... indeed a smart and strategic choice that we can all laugh at. Lets see how many more judgement and experience calls we continue to bitterly read here.

Let me get this straight, anyone here who doesn't think this was a dumb choice is "bitter"?

I see the same old misogyny we saw in the primaries is rearing its head again.

All? What a broad brush.

Behave everyone, Ewok is watching us.

It just bugs me. We have a first time black candidate for President. So who does McCain pick? A woman, a first, for running mate. Is this politics or a "lets see who out do's who in the firsts". Maybe I am odd, but I would prefer to pick someone who's policies match my needs. I am hopelessly old fashioned like that.

I agree with this, but when one side of the political spectrum is saying "Palin is like, so, much hotter than Clinton" and other is saying "OMFG - she's a beauty queen, must be an airhead." I like to call it for what it is not matter who is saying it.

Why would it "bug" you?

I feel very much OK with it all. Who cares who is first as long as there is a first!!!!!!! First black candidate, first woman potential VP. This country is progressing...who cares which party is first?

And I agree with the voting for the person whose policies match your own, regardless of gender/colour etc

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I am not apposed to "firsts". I am apposed to a competition on firsts.

It's an election - it's about getting votes. McCain needed a younger, conservative running mate. Being that she is a minority is simply a strategic plus.

Well, she's hotter than Ann Coulter. Just as crazy and corrupt, apparently.

She is also a strong social conservative who will not alienate the party's base with the same "maverick" reputation for bucking the party line that could attract independents.

And with regard to her educational credentials (as opposed to whether or not she was beauty queen) - pretty similar to Biden's (University of Idaho vs University of Delaware)

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to understand her appeal even if you don't agree with the other party's politics.

Illu----

........she has nothing else to add to his potential presidency other than the female vote?

M4E----

Is it a "competition of firsts" , though? I agree to disagree :)

Please don't think I am being argumentative, though,I'm really not. I am genuinely interested in what people think and have to say.... :)

Would he have picked her if his opponent not been a black man? If the answer to that question is yes, then I bow to his choice. Otherwise it really has nothing to do with issues. That strategy alone would cause me to rethink my vote.
